President, last week marked a significant step forward in Syria\u2019s compliance with its international obligations, with the\u00a0IAEA closure of Syria\u2019s longstanding safeguards file by consensus.<\/p>\n
After fifteen years of obstruction by the Assad regime, this decision is an important symbol of Syria\u2019s commitment to meeting its international obligations.<\/p>\n
And we\u00a0also commend Syria\u2019s constructive engagement with the OPCW.<\/p>\n
The United Kingdom stands ready to support the complete and verified destruction of Assad-era chemical weapons and the full implementation of Syria\u2019s obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention.<\/p>\n
Lasting stability will not be\u00a0delivered, though, by security arrangements alone.\u00a0<\/p>\n
It must be underpinned by reconciliation, accountability, and protection for all communities.<\/p>\n
We remain concerned by reports of ongoing violence in Northeast Syria.<\/p>\n
And we\u00a0continue to support a unified and inclusive Syria and encourage all parties to exercise restraint, avoid inflammatory rhetoric, and work together to resolve outstanding issues related to the implementation of the integration agreement.<\/p>\n
Ultimately, ensuring that all Syrians feel secure, represented, and protected\u00a0are an essential part of\u00a0Syria\u2019s journey towards long-term stability and recovery.<\/p>\n
To support the\u00a0recovery plans of the Syrian government and the needs of the\u00a0displaced and vulnerable populations, the United Kingdom will contribute $90 million this year.<\/p>\n
President, Syria\u2019s recovery remains fragile.<\/p>\n
Israel\u2019s actions risk increasing tensions at an already sensitive moment, including Prime Minister Netanyahu\u2019s recent visit to the summit of Mount Hermon in the UN Area of Separation.<\/p>\n
We continue to urge all parties to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could lead to further escalation.\u00a0<\/p>\n
And\u00a0call on Israel to set out a timeline for withdrawal from recently occupied Syrian territory.<\/p>\n
Dialogue remains the only sustainable path forward.<\/p>\n
We encourage continued engagement between Syria and Israel and welcome efforts to resolve differences through negotiation rather than confrontation.<\/p>\n
Respect for Syria\u2019s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence remains essential to securing long-term stability.<\/p>\n
