{"id":774960,"date":"2026-09-18T18:12:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-18T18:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/774960\/"},"modified":"2026-09-18T18:12:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-18T18:12:10","slug":"scottish-conservative-call-for-clear-labelling-of-halal-and-kosher-meats-branded-silly-by-highland-councillor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/774960\/","title":{"rendered":"Scottish Conservative call for clear labelling of halal and kosher meats branded \u2018silly\u2019 by Highland councillor"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A call for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverness-courier.co.uk\/news\/call-for-clear-labelling-of-halal-and-kosher-meat-served-at-445051\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">clear labelling of halal and kosher meat in Highland schools<\/a> has been passed despite being branded \u201csilly\u201d by one councillor.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 1104 744\" alt=\"The motion was called 'silly' by Cllr Ballance.\" data-root=\"\/_media\/img\/\" data-path=\"MMWQH4IKDP7G6AP06V5F.jpg\" data-ar=\"1.48\"\/>The motion was called &#8216;silly&#8217; by Cllr Ballance.<\/p>\n<p>The motion put forward by Conservative councillor Ruraidh Stewart (Skye and Raasay) was passed by Highland Council at a meeting on Thursday (September 17).<\/p>\n<p>It will require both clear labelling of meats and for suppliers to declare such information at the point of procurement so \u201cthe council can make informed purchasing decisions and provide accurate information to consumers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The motion was seconded by Cllr Stewart\u2019s party colleague Cllr Isabelle MacKenzie (Inverness Millburn).<\/p>\n<p>During a short debate on the motion, Cllr Chris Ballance (Aird and Loch Ness, Green) called it \u201csilly\u201d, pointing out how an impact assessment provided in response to the motion clearly stated: \u201cThe current core meat supplier does label Halal marketed products, and has advised that \u2018all our Halal meats have been pre-stunned and compliant in the UK and EU\u2019\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It added: \u201cThe current meat supplier does not offer Kosher products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Ballance\u2019s view was shared among others in the chamber as Cllr Christine Gillies (Skye and Raasay, Independent) asked \u201cwhy on earth are we here\u201d as she also pointed to the impact assessment.<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Alasdair Christie (Inverness Ness side, Liberal Democrats) said: \u201cThere is a lot of misinformation about this, all animals are pre-stunned in the UK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that, in his opinion, the motion was &#8220;probably put forward for different reasons\u201d but did not elaborate further.<\/p>\n<p>    Do you want to respond to this article?
