The United Kingdom is set to become the next step in STM\u2019s international expansion. The Bologna-based group, which specialises in gearboxes and gear motors and has so far maintained only a sales office across the Channel, is preparing to open a fully-fledged branch: it will be the company\u2019s eighteenth office worldwide and is set to open in 2027 to monitor more closely a market that has continued to expand in recent years. This is both a strategic and commercial decision, but also a response to a rapidly changing business landscape for the company.<\/p>\n
According to in February 2022, STM effectively lost the Russian market entirely, which accounted for around 8 million euros in revenue. And, according to the chairman and chief executive Tiziano Girotti, that market is now beyond recovery: \u201cThe segment in which we operated has been taken over by the Chinese.\u201d Business with Iran, too, has essentially ground to a halt, with the escalation of international tensions and the conflict with the United States. Hence the need to seek new outlets, strengthening markets capable of offering room for growth. The United Kingdom is therefore the first concrete step in this new phase.<\/p>\n
The company, however, did not stand still as its market share shrank. For 2026, the group forecasts aggregate revenues of over 130 million euros, compared with around 80 million ten years ago. Today, the company\u2019s products are sold in almost 90 countries and over half of its turnover comes from abroad. The organisation has 556 employees, five manufacturing companies, twelve subsidiary trading companies and five associated companies, with an average annual production of around one million gearboxes and gearmotors. In 2025, investments totalled 6.8 million. This scale of operation makes the choice of markets in which to grow even more crucial. And given the current period of uncertainty, the group has decided to focus on the most stable markets.<\/p>\n
The company\u2019s growth has been built up over time through a combination of organic development and acquisitions. The story began in 1976 in Bologna, when Girotti and Altero Vignoli turned their expertise in gear manufacturing into a project dedicated to power transmission. In 2000, the company joined the Gsm Group, which specialises in large gearboxes and lifting equipment; in 2022, Neri Motori, a long-established company from San Giovanni in Persiceto, joined the group, enabling Stm to round out its product range with integrated solutions combining gearboxes and electric motors. \u201cWe have lost entire markets and conquered new ones,\u201d observes Girotti. \u201cOur strength has been our ability to recognise change and adapt, whilst maintaining our expertise, quality and production capacity in Italia, but developing an increasingly international vision.\u201d<\/p>\n
The next test will therefore be England, where STM aims to transform its commercial presence into a permanent development outpost. And the push into foreign markets is proceeding hand in hand with a focus on people. This year, the company celebrated its 50th anniversary and chose to mark the occasion by granting, through a trade union agreement, \u20ac1,000 in welfare benefits to each employee, with no conditions tied to the company\u2019s results.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The United Kingdom is set to become the next step in STM\u2019s international expansion.
