{"id":775654,"date":"2026-09-19T09:52:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-19T09:52:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/775654\/"},"modified":"2026-09-19T09:52:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-19T09:52:10","slug":"hummingbird-hawk-moths-and-ivy-bees-the-insects-growing-in-number-as-temperatures-rise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/775654\/","title":{"rendered":"Hummingbird hawk moths and ivy bees: The insects growing in number as temperatures rise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">As parts of the West Midlands baked in warmer temperatures this summer, species once considered unusual in the region, such as hummingbird hawk moths, ivy bees and the wasp spider have been spotted in growing numbers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The hummingbird hawk moth, known for its furry grey body, orange hindwings and long proboscis, migrates to the UK from southern Europe and north Africa in the summer months. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">James Benwell, from the Birmingham and Black Country Wildlife Trust, said 2026 was a &#8220;record year&#8221; for sightings of the species, which was often mistaken for a small bird.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The moth, which can be seen hovering over flowers, has wings that beat about <a href=\"https:\/\/butterfly-conservation.org\/news-and-blog\/species-of-the-month-humming-bird-hawk-moth\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">80 times per second, external<\/a>, according to Benwell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;They&#8217;ve had a really good year this year,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Normally they would come in small numbers. We&#8217;d normally hear of a few maybe.
