She uses this power tactically: Her starving father sells her into slavery; she endures assault, abuse, and a loss of her sovereignty. However, with powers gifted to her by Poseidon, she transforms into a fisherman to escape, returns home, and repeats the cycle to survive.

To the outside world, shapeshifting looks like the ultimate superpower. However, when brought into the realm of psychology, “shape-shifting” is a defense mechanism and a survival strategy, not a superpower.

Masking

Far from being a magical gift, psychological shapeshifting usually comes at a steep emotional cost. For many people, changing who they are isn’t a choice made from a place of power—it is a mandatory response to a world that feels unsafe.

In psychology, shapeshifting is closely related to behavioral mimicry, often called the “chameleon effect.” This is the unconscious habit of mimicking the postures, mannerisms, and expressions of those around us to fit in. Taken to an extreme, it becomes masking.

True superpowers are driven by the user’s will. Psychological masking, however, is driven by a deep fear of rejection and a poor sense of self. A weak or unclear sense of self is problematic, associated with personality disorders and other psychiatric conditions, insecure attachment, difficulty with personal and professional relationships, and personal development hitches. A poor sense of self in psychology often stems from unresolved childhood trauma and usually means a person has an underdeveloped, unstable identity. They will lack a clear understanding of their own preferences, values, strengths, and boundaries outside of others. Over time, they become a “shapeshifter” with a rapidly shifting, poor sense of self.

Individuation is an ongoing process that involves developing a deep sense of self—truly knowing who you are and what you like, separate from other people. As Carl Jung described it, individuation is your journey toward true alignment with your soul’s blueprint, leading to profound wholeness and the realization of your unique potential and highest purpose. It’s about becoming the most complete and authentic version of yourself by integrating all parts of who you are.

Having your own unique thoughts, feelings, needs, and boundaries is essential for cultivating a strong sense of self. Trauma often leaves behind clues, and over time, the so-called shapeshifter may have learnt to base their self-esteem and self-worth on the expectations or influences of others. However, no identity quite feels like home.

The “Fawn” Response

Children who grow up in volatile, unpredictable, or abusive environments often become expert psychological shapeshifters. They learn to read the emotional temperature of a room instantly and alter their entire demeanor to avoid conflict—a survival mechanism known as the “fawn” response.

While this functions as a brilliant tool to survive childhood, it becomes deeply maladaptive in adulthood. The individual compulsively shifts into whatever version of themselves a partner, boss, or friend wants them to be, completely erasing their own boundaries just to keep the peace. The constant psychological shapeshifting leads to identity diffusion, a painful state where a person genuinely does not know who they are when they are alone. They can not imagine existing outside of others’ orbit and continuously shapeshift to feel safe and accepted.

But ultimately, a sense of security and self-esteem can only come from within. When you lack self-love and need it from your partner, you inadvertently push that partner away. For those with a lack of ego, embarking on a new relationship can create fear and uncertainty. For this reason, one may feel tempted to go into a rapid merging phase—losing the sense of self and having their identity become eclipsed by the other. True confidence is interior, not exterior. You become vulnerable when your sense of security and happiness is contingent on the actions of others.

The True Superpower

A mythological shapeshifter like Mestra always retains her true core identity when she shifts back into human form. A psychological shapeshifter, however, often looks in the mirror and feels “blank.” They have a poor sense of self and have lost touch with their own genuine desires, values, and emotions.

Miller’s reimagining of Mestra reminds us that transforming yourself to survive a demanding world is an act of incredible resilience. But psychology reminds us of the ultimate goal: The true superpower isn’t the ability to keep changing shapes, but the freedom to finally stop shifting and exist as you truly are.

To read Madeline Miller’s Mestra simply as a fantasy is to miss its point; we must look past…

[3
59,57,58,50,56,54,55
post-775952","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-united-kingdom","tag-gb","tag-great-britain","tag-greatbritain","tag-news","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
