A TV star from the reality show Love & Hip Hop Atlanta has announced he\u2019s de-transitioning after spending more than a decade living life as a trans woman.<\/p>\n
D Smith, who is now going by he\/him pronouns, has starred on the series since 2016, which follows a group of people in Atlanta who work in the hip hop music scene.<\/p>\n
In a new Instagram post<\/a>, Smith explained that he\u2019s strived to follow his heart for the majority of his life, \u2018even when the path wasn\u2019t easy to understand\u2019.<\/p>\n \u2018Over the last twelve years, I lived my life publicly as a transgender woman. Those years weren\u2019t a mistake. They were real. They introduced me to extraordinary people, profound experiences, and lessons that I will always carry with me forever,\u2019 the caption read.<\/p>\n \u2018Over the past several months, I\u2019ve begun a new chapter in my life. Going forward, I\u2019ll be living and presenting as a man and using he\/him pronouns.\u2019<\/p>\n Smith, who made the documentary film Kokomo City in 2023 about four Black transgender sex workers, emphasised that the change in his life didn\u2019t mean that he was \u2018erasing\u2019 his past.<\/p>\n \t\t \u2018Living my life as a woman for 12 years showed me the man that I wanted to become,\u2019 he wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u2018My respect and love for the transgender community remain unchanged, and I continue to believe that every person deserves to live with dignity, safety, and compassion and have the freedom to become themselves.\u2019<\/p>\n Smith shared a picture of himself alongside the caption, smiling while wearing a pair of black shorts and a black T-shirt.<\/p>\n He continued: \u2018Life is constantly pushing me to grow. Even when I feel tired, discouraged, or alone, life has given me strength because I chose purpose over fear. I\u2019m deeply grateful to everyone who supported me throughout every season of my life.<\/p>\n \u2018There is much more to this journey than can\u2019t fit into this statement. When the time is right, I\u2019ll share that story in full. Until then, thank you for allowing me space to continue growing.\u2019<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tOne person’s experience of detransitioning\t\t\t<\/p>\n \u2018For me, the journey of coming out as transgender has been a squiggly path.<\/p>\n \u2018So squiggly that, in June of this year, I had to go backwards in order to find a new way forward.<\/p>\n \u2018Detransitioning<\/a>, which typically involves reverting socially and medically to your gender assigned at birth, has been a vital part of my trans journey.<\/p>\n \u2018It\u2019s given me a safer space to do the mental and emotional work I know I need to live authentically \u2013 work that I wouldn\u2019t have realised I needed without coming out the first time around.\u2019<\/p>\n To read more, click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n Smith has been inundated with messages of support, including from singer Christina Milian, who commented: \u2018Love you. \ud83c\udf31 keep always growing.\u2019<\/p>\n Pose star Indya Moore, who is a trans woman, left a lengthy comment sharing a \u2018love letter to you and all Trans people who are moving through their understanding of themselves\u2019.<\/p>\n As part of the letter, she wrote: \u2018Our experience in transness is so much more complex than just being trans \u2013 though our experience is siloed that way \u2013 but being trans is just one of the various facets of being a Human being \u2013 and being by a human being is glorious reflection of so many ways life exists.<\/p>\n \u2018It seems like you know this but I want to affirm that all of our transitions are normal AND SINCERE to every phase of existence that we witness ourselves in and present. You have a wealth of knowledge, and experience of all the different ways it means to be alive free Loving and Loved.
