\n The committee won the support of 77 per cent of members who voted in the motion, which was brought forward by 21 members opposed to entering into a proposed partnership with The Ancient Links Golf Company<\/a> (TALGC).\n<\/p>\n

\n The result means that the committee will remain in place as members prepare to consider the separate proposal for TALGC to take over the day-to-day running of the club.\n<\/p>\n

\n However, some members are unhappy about the way that the meeting was conducted, telling the Courier: “Despite about 80 or so people attending, the management committee stated that it was just a vote, with no opportunity to ask questions or debate.\n<\/p>\n

\n Glen Golf Club’s committee have not responded to the Courier’s attempts to contact them for a response.\n<\/p>\n

\n TALGC has offered an investment package of between \u00a38 million and \u00a310 million for improvements to the course, clubhouse and facilities.\n<\/p>\n

\n They also anticipate to grow visitor income through higher visitor green fees and an increase in annual visitors from about 7,000 to about 10,000 per year.\n<\/p>\n

\n Members would retain playing rights through a golf access rights agreement that could not be changed without their consent, while fee increases would be capped at \u00a340 for the first five years; existing members, meanwhile, would become \u2018founding members\u2019 and enjoy protected tee times.\n<\/p>\n

\n However, the talks have proved highly divisive, with supporters pointing to the scale of investment on offer, while opponents have questioned whether the club should surrender operational control, as well as the background of the firm’s American backer, Douglas Cifu.\n<\/p>\n

\n Mr Cifu, a retired millionaire and minority shareholder in ice hockey team the Florida Panthers, was suspended indefinitely by the National Hockey League over comments made on the social media platform X referencing the humanitarian situation in Gaza for which he later apologised.\n<\/p>\n

\n Just a day before the no-confidence vote, Michael Wells<\/a> stepped down as a director from TALGC.\n<\/p>\n

\n Mr Wells previously served as chief executive of Carnoustie Golf Links, which has entered into a partnership with the American-backed firm.\n<\/p>\n

\n No reason has been given for his departure.\n<\/p>\n

\n Members are set to decide on the proposed partnership between TALGC and the Glen<\/a> at a special general meeting on September 30.\n<\/p>\n

\n A second investment strategy has also been put forward by the management committee which would see sustained investment of \u00a33.81 million over five years and allow the club to remain independently operated.\n<\/p>\n

\n The improvements would be funded through a combination of borrowing, increased fees and a potential capital levy on members.\n<\/p>\n

\n The proposals include \u00a31.5 million for clubhouse redevelopment, \u00a31.2 million for irrigation and \u00a3600,000 for an independent water supply and reservoir.\n<\/p>\n

\n The proposed water scheme would involve abstracting water from the Glen Burn during winter and storing it for irrigation.\n<\/p>\n

\n The strategy would also provide for additional staff in golf operations and course management, improved health-and-safety compliance, better maintenance planning, more structured junior coaching and safeguarding, and measures to ensure a better pace of play.\n<\/p>\n

\n The independent plan aims to increase visitor income while retaining control of the course.\n<\/p>\n

\n Green fees would be slated to rise from \u00a3150 in 2027 to \u00a3230 by 2031, while the projected average fee would increase from \u00a3105 to \u00a3161.\n<\/p>\n

\n Visitor numbers are forecast to increase from about 6,500 rounds in 2027 to 8,500 in 2031, with visitor revenue projected to almost double, rising from \u00a3682,500 to \u00a31.37 million over the same period.\n<\/p>\n

\n The club is also considering a five-year capital levy, although this would need approval from members at a special general meeting.\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n Depending on the level chosen, a levy of between \u00a3100 and \u00a3300 for full members could raise about \u00a3399,000 to \u00a31.2 million over five years.\n<\/p>\n

\n The strength of feeling over the proposals has also spilled beyond the club and online, with critics turning to music to voice their opposition.\n<\/p>\n

\n Jonny Williams, of NB Songwriters, has published a song about the dispute, described as an \u201canthemic song about heritage, belonging and responsibility\u201d.\n<\/p>\n

\n He added: “It tells the story of a place that has been shaped not only by golf, but by the generations of people who have played, worked, walked and gathered there.”\n<\/p>\n
