But a new analysis of genome samples and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\/archaeology\/new-dinosaur-species-discovered-south-wales-b2850632.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">museum specimens <\/a>reveals that they comprise five distinct species.<\/p>\n<p>One of the five species, named Leopardus tilcayo, was found in Yungas, the eastern slope of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/andes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andes<\/a> where the mountain range meets the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\/archaeology\/ancient-amazon-garden-city-ducks-corn-b2668984.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon basin<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/bolivia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bolivia<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/2026-09-17T154146Z_238128909_RC2KANAC4Y4W_RTRMADP_3_SCIENCE-CAT.JPG\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A Leopardus tilcayo cat, a newly identified species\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>A Leopardus tilcayo cat, a newly identified species (Reuters)<\/p>\n<p>Measuring at 45-50cm long, with a tail of 10in, L tilcayo is smaller than an average housecat, according to a study detailing the discovery published in the journal Current Biology.<\/p>\n<p>The tiger cat weighs just 1.4-2kg.<\/p>\n<p>A subspecies, called Leopardus tigrinus antisuyo, was also found in the Yungas of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/peru\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Peru<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Its name is inspired by a region of the Inca Empire where the feline is currently located.<\/p>\n<p>In spite of their similar appearances, tigrillos belong to different evolutionary lineages.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers made the discovery after a scitneist who was volunteering at the sanctuary noticed the cat looked unusual.<\/p>\n<p>It had been found in the forest by a local resident, who believed it was a domestic kitten, but it soon it became clear that it did not behave like a house cat. According to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/science\/environment\/new-wild-cat-species-identified-rcna598113?fbclid=IwY2xjawUbTdVwZG9mBWV4dG4DYWVtAjEwAGJyaWQRMXpEdFhWUnUxTElVNnk4dk5zcnRjBmFwcF9pZBAyMjIwMzkxNzg4MjAwODkyAAEemTBZ34ho7xhQsFkuDLM7XXgLOSMx8D3P0sbv8qWrbUqmv8edorNJTMhATnE_aem_suJ0mjiBCO__uojUT4j-eA\">NBC News<\/a>, the man had fed the animal noodles, rice and eggs, before realising it was wild and that he could not take care of it &#8211; so he brought it to the sanctuary. <\/p>\n<p>Scientists studied genomes collected from 38 felines in different countries across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/south-america\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">South America<\/a>.
