{"id":777684,"date":"2026-09-21T09:52:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-21T09:52:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/777684\/"},"modified":"2026-09-21T09:52:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-21T09:52:10","slug":"two-whales-found-dead-after-pod-spotted-in-thames-off-essex","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/777684\/","title":{"rendered":"Two whales found dead after pod spotted in Thames, off Essex"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Long-finned pilot whales typically favour cooler, temperate waters beyond the continental shelf in the Atlantic Ocean. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The pod was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cqrk385p3r5jo\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first spotted on Thursday<\/a>, but the BDMLR said one showed signs of illness and became separated from the group on Friday morning before being found near East Tilbury. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Kent Fire and Rescue Service, HM Coastguard and Port of London Authority teams attended, along with members of the BDMLR. They found two whales \u2014 one deceased and one alive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The live animal refloated on the incoming tide after dark and rejoined the rest of the group, the BDMLR said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The deceased whale was a female measuring approximately three metres, which is around the length for maturity and it is possible that a debilitated member of the pod is the reason for the animals to have come into this unusual situation,&#8221; the group said. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Long-finned pilot whales typically favour cooler, temperate waters beyond the continental shelf in the Atlantic Ocean.
