We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>UK households are being urged to stock up on essential items in case of emergencies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/tinned-food-government-weather-britons-b3039378.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to reports.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A new public information drive is set to encourage people to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/el-nino-extreme-weather-warning-food-b3044675.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prepare for extreme weather<\/a>, cyber attacks and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/voices\/editorials\/hybrid-warm-war-russia-cyberattacks-drone-warfare-b3052594.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hostile state action<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The national resilience campaign aims to highlight the steps people can take to stay safe in a crisis that may cause power or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/milk-shortage-england-wales-drought-b3053130.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">water supplies<\/a> to stop or where shops are forced to close. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/government\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">government<\/a> aims to help people cope in a national disaster, in order to free resources for most vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p>What will people be asked to stockpile? <\/p>\n<p>Tinned food and bottled water are some of the essential items the government could ask people to stock up on. <\/p>\n<p>Environment Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/angela-eagle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Angela Eagle <\/a>stressed the importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/el-nino-extreme-weather-warning-food-b3044675.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">keeping supplies at home<\/a>, after forecasters<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/el-nino-weather-uk-2026-effect-b3044156.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> predicted the biggest El Nino in 1,000 years. <\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/iStock-521812351.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"The government could ask people to stock up on tinned food and bottled water\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>The government could ask people to stock up on tinned food and bottled water (Getty\/iStock)<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about the wetter winters and drier summers the El Nino will bring, Ms Eagle told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2026\/sep\/03\/angela-eagle-uk-stock-up-supplies-el-nino-warning\">the Guardian<\/a>: \u201cIf you\u2019ve got a store of a bit of food that can keep you going for a while before the emergency services can get to you, you\u2019re going to be a lot better off than if you haven\u2019t. So some of it is that kind of preparation for just being a bit more resilient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A source previously told The Financial Times: \u201cThere will be practical advice on things you can do to improve domestic resilience, like having some bottled water and tinned food. It will be common sense, not scaremongering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What threats is the government worried about? <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/andy-burnham\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andy Burnham<\/a>\u2019s government is focusing on national resilience in the wake of threats from Russia. <\/p>\n<p>The government is also concerned following the record-breaking heatwaves the UK has experienced this summer, plunging the country into drought and causing numerous wildfires. <\/p>\n<p>According to the FT, the government is accelerating work on its \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/war\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">war<\/a> book\u201d \u2013 a manual for the defence of the nation against external threats \u2013 as well as a social media campaign with advice to help people to deal with the impacts of extreme <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/weather\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">weather<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It also updated its national risk register last month, with the risk of interference in the UK\u2019s democratic process added to it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/2295851432...jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Vladimir Putin\u2019s government warned that British facilities in Ukraine will be considered \u201clegitimate targets\u201d if they are used to support long-range strikes against Russia.\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Vladimir Putin\u2019s government warned that British facilities in Ukraine will be considered \u201clegitimate targets\u201d if they are used to support long-range strikes against Russia. (AFP\/Getty)<\/p>\n<p>The national risk register is the government\u2019s assessment of the most significant risks facing the UK. <\/p>\n<p>It is a planning tool designed to help professionals prepare for risks and is not intended to be a prediction of future events.<\/p>\n<p>However, this change comes as Vladimir Putin\u2019s government warned that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/british\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">British<\/a> facilities in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/ukraine\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ukraine<\/a> will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/ukraine-vladimir-putin-british-russia-kyiv-b3052572.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">considered \u201clegitimate targets\u201d<\/a> if they are used to support long-range strikes against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/russia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Russia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Russian foreign ministry summoned the UK\u2019s deputy head of mission in Moscow Danae Dholakia to complain about British support for Ukraine in the war triggered by Mr Putin\u2019s invasion four years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The senior diplomat was warned that Russia could take \u201cretaliatory measures\u201d in response.<\/p>\n<p>A statement issued by the Russian foreign ministry said Ms Dholakia was \u201cissued a strong protest\u201d over the supply of drones and other weapons systems to Volodymyr Zelensky\u2019s forces in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/2290476969...jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"The Government also plans to advise people on how to deal with the impacts of extreme weather\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>The Government also plans to advise people on how to deal with the impacts of extreme weather (Getty)<\/p>\n<p>The Independent also reported that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/drones-uk-military-bases-russia-putin-iran-b3051804.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rogue drones are targeting Britain\u2019s military bases<\/a> almost daily, leaving the UK vulnerable to growing threats from Russia and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iran.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some 340 security incidents involving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/drones\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drones<\/a> were reported at or near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/ministry-of-defence\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ministry of Defence<\/a> sites in the year to August 2026, data obtained under freedom of information laws show.
