Samsung could follow Apple with verified batteries

Tushar Mehta / Android Authority

Add Android Authority on Google:

TL;DR

Samsung will reportedly add a security chip to the batteries in some of its smartphones.
This verified battery system could help customers avoid third-party batteries, which might not offer the same safety guarantees.
This also comes years after Apple introduced its own battery verification system and parts pairing practice.

Apple has long used a verification program for iPhone batteries, allowing you to quickly check if you have a genuine battery in your smartphone. Now, it sounds like Samsung could bring a similar verification system to Galaxy phones.

The Elec reports that Samsung will add a security chip to the batteries in some of its phones. The company will apparently add this chip to batteries inside upcoming mid-range phones, including the Galaxy A series.

It’s unclear how these security chips will be used, but the outlet speculates that Samsung could add these chips as part of safety measures. A verified battery should give consumers peace of mind that their battery has been adequately tested and meets Samsung’s performance and safety standards.

The outlet also suggests that security chips in these batteries could help with the recycling process. A verified battery would theoretically give recyclers reliable information about the battery manufacturer, usage details, and other related information. These details could help companies choose the correct or most efficient recycling method.

“We cannot confirm the direction of technology development for next-generation products,” a Samsung official told The Elec when asked about these verified batteries.

Nevertheless, we do have some concerns about Samsung potentially adopting verified batteries. Apple previously offered a parts-pairing system, which forced consumers to get component replacements (including batteries) from Apple itself or authorized repairers. This also hampered DIY repairs, as only Apple and its authorized partners could “verify” replacement parts. Thankfully, Apple now offers a Repair Assistant tool for DIY repairs. So we really hope Samsung doesn’t go down this same road with future Galaxy phones.

Thank you for being part of our community.
