<\/p>\nMPs cite ‘deeply disturbing’ issues raised by women across the area<\/p>\n
Three MPs including South Derbyshire\u2019s Samantha Niblett, Burton\u2019s Jacob Collier and Lichfield\u2019s Dave Robertson have signed the letter to UHDB\u2019s chief executive, Stephen Posey.<\/p>\n
Extensive waiting lists, delayed diagnosis and treatment, a lack of listening and knowledge shortfalls have led to concerningly \u201cpoor\u201d healthcare<\/a> for Derbyshire women, it has been claimed.<\/p>\n Criticism of healthcare provided by the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust<\/a>, which oversees Royal Derby Hospital<\/a>, has been aired in an open letter.<\/p>\n Three MPs including South Derbyshire\u2019s Samantha Niblett, Burton\u2019s Jacob Collier and Lichfield\u2019s Dave Robertson have signed the letter to UHDB\u2019s chief executive, Stephen Posey.<\/p>\n In a post on social media Ms Niblett says: \u201cI have been deeply disturbed, and quite frankly upset, by some cases that have been raised with me by constituents who are suffering in so much pain.\u201d<\/p>\n She says the letter aims to address concerns about \u201cpoor provision of health care for many women across South Derbyshire\u201d.<\/p>\n The letter seeks to \u201cat least\u201d have the most serious cases affecting women\u2019s health to be re-evaluated and checked to see if they are still on the very waiting lists they believe to be on.<\/p>\n The MPs say this could include second opinions, case review or fast-tracking \u201cto decrease the amount of waiting time and suffering\u201d, with women experiencing \u201cvery real physical, psychological and social issues caused by their conditions\u201d.<\/p>\n In response, the hospital trust has said \u201csome women are waiting longer than the trust would like\u201d, that it recognises the \u201csignificant impact\u201d of the concerns raised and that demand for gynaecological services is high nationally.<\/p>\n The letter says the NHS body which develops health services across Derbyshire \u2013 the integrated care board \u2013 could look at providing funding to speed up the waiting lists for the top gynaecological conditions.<\/p>\n The MPs say: \u201cWe are writing to you to highlight our increasing concerns for our female constituents who are facing increasing hardship in seeking diagnosis and treatment for a range of gynaecological issues.\u201d<\/p>\n This includes the length of time taken to secure a diagnosis for endometriosis, which affects one in 10 women, and involves extra tissue similar to the lining of the womb growing in other places such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes, often leading to significant pain.<\/p>\n The letter mentions issues with \u201cwomen not being listened to and heard when they tell clinicians they want surgery, do not want children and are making a fully-informed decision about their bodies.<\/p>\n It says some women have \u201cfallen off\u201d waiting lists, \u201cprolonging\u201d their delay for treatment or diagnosis.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, delays are also being experienced for referrals, investigations, treatment specialist appointments and follow-ups.<\/p>\n The letter says there is \u201cinconsistent knowledge and understanding\u201d from staff about women\u2019s gynaecological conditions including endometriosis, but also adenomyosis and polycystic ovary syndrome.<\/p>\n Adenomyosis involves the lining of the womb growing into the muscle in the wall of the womb, leading to pain for the patient.<\/p>\n Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome is a hormone condition that can affect hair growth, periods, fertility and mood, the NHS says.<\/p>\n The letter mentions variation in care between clinicians and availability fluctuating based on geographical location;
