<\/p>\nWhat is supposed to be the motivation for a collection of Australasians, Asians, Canadians and others from around the globe to come together as a golf team for one week every two years?<\/p>\n
Perhaps beating those pesky Americans is the only unifier necessary. The International Team will aim for its first win since 1998 and the United States will shoot for its 11th straight victory when the Presidents Cup begins at Medinah Country Club near Chicago on Friday morning (NZT).<\/p>\n
Australian captain Geoff Ogilvy said the Internationals’ group chat has never been more active.<\/p>\n
“They just seem to be in really good spirits. They’ve been very excited to get here for quite a long time,” the captain said. “I don’t know, it’s just a good-feeling group. I think the time is right.”<\/p>\n
New Zealand’s Ryan Fox, who is playing his first Presidents Cup, will play with Australian Adam Scott on the first day up against Wyndham Clark and Collin Morikawa.<\/p>\n

How it works<\/p>\n
Unlike the Ryder Cup, which pits top players from the United States and Europe, the Presidents Cup is contested among top US players and top players from around the world outside of Europe.<\/p>\n
The four-day event will include 30 total matches between the 12-player teams from the United States and the International Team. All matches are worth one point, with each side receiving a half point if a match finishes in a tie.<\/p>\n
There are no playoffs. If the event is tied at the end of Singles play, it will be deemed a tie and the teams will share the Presidents Cup. The United States has won 10 consecutive Presidents Cups and owns a 13-1-1 all-time record in the event.<\/p>\n
Venue<\/p>\n
Medinah will play host to the Presidents Cup for the first time and is the sixth different US venue to host the event.<\/p>\n
Medinah has played host to two PGA Championships (1999, 2006) and three US Opens (1949, 1975, 1990). It was also the venue for the 2012 Ryder Cup, won by Europe. The PGA Tour is paying participating players, captains and assistant captains $250,000 (NZ$440,000) each for participating this week.<\/p>\n
