Especially when those people are the Beastie Boys.

Being the Beastie Boys, they were not exactly the sort of band to make life easy for the poor chap tasked with keeping them on track, and the addition of a basketball hoop and skate ramp to the studio where they were recording Ill Communication probably didn’t do much to help keep them focused.

But while life must have been pretty rough for producer Mario Caldato Jr, we do sort of have him to thank for one of their greatest songs. “I can’t stand it, I know you planned it,” screams Adam ‘Ad-Rock’ Horovitz on the opening lines of ‘Sabotage’ – an explosive song whose inspiration remained shrouded in mystery for years, until, in 2018, the Beastie Boys finally let everyone in on the joke.

In Beastie Boys Book, the surviving Boys explain the evolution of the song, and how it developed from a more traditional rap song into a light-hearted “fuck you” to their increasingly exasperated producer. Like most of the tracks from the Ill Communication sessions, MCA’s legendary bassline spent a while kicking around as a loose idea while the Beasties struggled to decide on the direction their sound should take for the new album.

As the group toyed with ideas like layering a Queen Latifah vocal sample over the instrumental track, Caldato grew increasingly frustrated with their inability to finish anything, which in turn would lead to him getting very angry. “We were totally indecisive about what, when, why and how to complete songs. Mario was getting frustrated. That’s a really calm way of saying that he would blow a fuse and get pissed off at us and scream that we just needed to finish something, anything, a song”, recalled the band in said Beastie Boys Book.

Eventually, as the Beasties closed in on wrapping Ill Communication, Horovitz decided that the best use of one particular instrumental track they’d put down – then called “Chris Rock”, after a studio engineer named Chris who thought the track rocked – would be to have some fun at the expense of the man who was desperately trying to get them to finish the bloody thing.

“I decided it would be funny to write a song about how Mario was holding us all down, how he was trying to mess it all up, sabotaging our great works of art”, he said. There are two sides to every story, and while it does sound as though he was quite possibly acting very much like the fun police, if I had three musicians running around my studio throwing basketballs at each other while I was trying to get them to finish an album, I’d quite possibly have lost my rag too.

Further reading: From The Vault

It seems there was no long-standing ill will between Mario and the band after the release of ‘Sabotage’ either, with Horovitz telling South by Southwest: “The lyrics are all going to be about how Mario is the worst person in the world and he’s holding all of us back. He’s not. He’s a wonderful person and has always been encouraging.”

The video for ‘Sabotage’ was nominated for ‘Video of the Year’, ‘Best Group Video’, ‘Breakthrough Video’, ‘Best Direction in a Video’, and ‘Viewer’s Choice’ at the 1994 MTV Video Music Awards, while the track itself went platinum in the UK after selling over half a million records – not bad for a song written to wind up the bloke trying to get them to finish it in the first place.

Let’s hope they bought Mario a thank-you beer or two.

ADD AS A PREFERRED SOURCE ON GOOGLE

[28
32677,203932,12883,140298,96,677,128,678,212731,56,54,55
post-780932","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-music","tag-1990s","tag-203932","tag-album","tag-beastie-boys","tag-entertainment","tag-hip-hop","tag-music","tag-rap","tag-the-beastie-boys","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
