The US<\/a> has defended artificial intelligence<\/a> after a rogue agent managed to infiltrate a sensitive government health website.<\/p>\n An OpenAI agent that was researching health<\/a> statistics accessed files from multiple Australian government websites in June.<\/p>\n Australian Medicare said it wasn\u2019t told about the hacking until months later, on September 10, when it was sent an email to a general inbox.<\/p>\n Although the AI wasn\u2019t able to access \u2018sensitive\u2019 files, the incident has raised more concerns about the technology\u2019s safety, as it accessed three other government systems.<\/p>\n In a statement, OpenAI said: \u2018We identified activity involving several Australian government websites and services as our models attempted to look up answers and available statistics for questions about Australia<\/a> during an internal evaluation. In the course of that, our models took actions we did not intend.<\/p>\n \t\t \u2018Our overall review is ongoing, and we remain committed to transparency about these issues and to sharing what we learn as that work<\/a> continues.\u2019<\/p>\n Experts told the BBC that this seems to be the first known hack of a government website by an artificial intelligence agent.<\/a><\/p>\n In light of the worrying hack, Trump doubled down on accelerating AI, telling the UN: \u2018We\u2019re leading now [in AI innovation] over China<\/a> by a lot and everyone else, and we\u2019re going to keep it that way.\u2019<\/p>\n Trump also claimed fears about AI are being \u2018perpetuated by the Radical Left\u2019 after lead researchers issued sobering warnings.<\/p>\n Earlier this month, Anthropic safety researcher Evan Hubinger warned he believed there was\u00a0a greater than 10% chance that artificial intelligence\u00a0could wipe out humanity within 10 years<\/a>.<\/p>\n \t\t It came after his\u00a0former colleague, Jacob Coxon, quit the company, claiming it wasn\u2019t \u2018acting responsibly\u2019 to stop the threat of human extinction he believes AI poses<\/a>.<\/p>\n But the US president hit back against the claims, branding himself the \u2018hoax buster\u2019.<\/p>\n On the social networking platform Truth Social, he wrote: \u2018The AI Hoax being perpetrated by the Radical Left Dumocrats is reminiscent of their Global Warming Scam of not so long ago, where everyone was going to die from extreme heat.\u2019<\/p>\n Trump said those raising concerns are \u2018revolutionaries for a Bad and Evil cause\u2019 and suggested they were working against the best interests of the\u00a0United States<\/a>.<\/p>\n But even the largest brains and businesses in artificial intelligence have called for slowing down AI development for fear of \u2018human extinction\u2019.<\/p>\n Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk<\/a>.<\/p>\n For more stories like this, check our news page<\/a>.<\/p>\n Arrow Arrow Arrow![\"The](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/SEI_313784987-67c8.jpg\")
