It\u2019s just a thing the kids are saying now: \u201cThat\u2019s AI!\u201d or \u201cThat\u2019s so AI!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">But what is? Something inauthentic, unbelievable or rubbish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Which was made by AI? No. Artificial intelligence has very little to do with this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">But isn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2026\/sep\/15\/could-ai-really-wipe-out-humanity-and-hijack-the-internet\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">artificial intelligence poised to destroy humankind<\/a>? Very possibly, but that doesn\u2019t concern us right now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">It doesn\u2019t? No. The kids \u2013 gen Alpha \u2013 have noticed that certain qualities of AI-generated slop, such as the way it\u2019s superficially convincing but ultimately cheap and of dubious value, can be found in lots of other things: knock-off merchandise, exaggerated claims, excuses your parents make. If something is considered somehow suspect, then it is also, by definition, AI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Is \u201cThat\u2019s AI\u201d the new \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2025\/oct\/20\/six-seven-latest-slang-should-parents-be-worried\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">six-seven<\/a>\u201d? No, this bit of slang means something: the young people have simply broadened the definition of AI to make it equivalent to \u201cbullshit\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">So it\u2019s always deployed as an insult? Always.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">But aren\u2019t things more complicated than that? Couldn\u2019t AI also be our saviour, as long as good judgment is used and the right guardrails are in place? While the rest of us are having that debate, gen Alpha has already made up its mind: AI is so AI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">What will happen when AI finds out it\u2019s AI? Will it get trapped in a logical feedback loop until all the datacentres start exploding? You\u2019re not a very scientific person, are you?<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Anyway, didn\u2019t Donald Trump just change the name of artificial intelligence to \u201csuper intelligence\u201d, or SI? SI is so AI. And Donald Trump is AI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Not for the first time this year, I feel like dumping all my tech stocks. Tech stocks are AI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">What about driverless taxis? Driverless taxis are AI, especially the ones that have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2026\/aug\/05\/self-driving-taxis-approved-london-summer-2026-wayve-uber\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">humans in the driver\u2019s seat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">My job in marketing was certainly AI, which is probably why AI took it. I\u2019m sorry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Do say: \u201cThat\u2019s so AI!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Don\u2019t say: \u201cNo, that\u2019s Al \u2013 Al Gordon.
