Cumberland Council’s environmental enforcement team traced the rubbish to the local barber shop, which has not been named, during their investigation.

Councillor Denise Rollo, executive member for sustainable, resilient and connected places at Cumberland Council, said: “Businesses have a legal responsibility to dispose of their waste correctly, and we take a zero-tolerance approach to those who fail to do so.

“Public recycling bring sites are provided for residents to recycle household materials and are not intended for commercial waste.

“Leaving waste alongside bins is unacceptable, creates an eyesore, can encourage further littering and fly-tipping, and places unnecessary costs on taxpayers.

“Our enforcement team investigates reports of waste offences thoroughly and works hard to identify those responsible.

“Where there is clear evidence of an offence, we will not hesitate to take enforcement action.”

Cllr Rollo emphasised that most businesses comply with regulations, but warned that misuse of public recycling sites would not be tolerated.

The council issued a fixed penalty notice of £1,000 to the business, which was paid, avoiding further legal action.

Cumberland Council is urging the public to continue reporting incidents of fly-tipping and waste crime to help keep communities clean.
