Kyle Feldt has explained his St Helens’ exit and warned any NRL players who are making a move to Super League to temper their expectations.

Feldt signed for St Helens ahead of the 2025 season, arriving from North Queensland Cowboys, the club he had represented all of his life. As such, he admitted that moving to England was something that he was nervous about but he found success.

His debut season saw the winger score more than a try per game and even in 2026, when he left the club mid-season, he was still scoring at a rate of more than a try per game with his final tally being 33 tries in 29 matches.

Despite that, his departure was sudden and unplanned and he’s explained that it was simply down to issues with then head coach Paul Rowley, as well as his desire not to hold up a playing spot that could otherwise go to a young player.

Speaking on Chad Townsend’s podcast, Feldt explained: “We had a coach change. Paul Wellens was the coach there last year, he was a really good coach and a good fella. I got on with him like a house on fire and he actually moved to the Cowboys.

“The new coach came in and it was all good but then we kind of didn’t see eye to eye, I just wasn’t really enjoying my time there and you know what it’s like. You get older and you don’t want to be holding out a young kid so I just thought instead of hanging on and trying to see out the year, why not leave.

“I had no family keeping me there, just me and my wife and kids, and I thought why not leave now and get stuck into real world life.”

As well as lifting the lid on his St Helens’ exit, Feldt also spoke about the big differences between Super League and the NRL, with the facilities unsurprisingly being the number one thing he highlighted.

“The only advice I would give is don’t set expectations real high,” he said, before going on to suggest that moving to Super League is like ‘going back a few years’,

“Over there [England], the game is a lot different to over here [Australia]. The training facilities are completely different. Over here, we have high performance centres at every club but over there the money and backing isn’t as big so you’re going back a few years.

“The game itself is starting to change and to catch up to NRL. With the new rules coming in, it’s going to be good in the next couple of years but at this stage in my career, it was like I stood back in time.”

He added: “I enjoyed my time. I’m glad I did it, I can tick it off the bucket list, I wouldn’t go back again but I’ve ticked it off the bucket list.”

Feldt, who made a code switch to play AFL after returning down under, also refused to rule out a comeback, although he admitted it would not be at the NRL level.

“The itch is still there but I’m pretty sure this [upcoming season] is my last year,” he said.

“I’ll have a word with the wife and with the doctor and if there’s nothing wrong, I’ll probably fork it out in the Q Cup or something but I’ll see how I go.”
