The late Dolly Parton<\/a> is set to posthumously feature on U2<\/a>\u2019s new song \u2018Torn\u2019, the final recorded vocal performance of her career.<\/p>\n

The duet with Bono<\/a> will close the Irish band\u2019s forthcoming 16th album, \u2018Carnaval De Luz\u2019<\/a>, which is due for release on November 13.<\/p>\n

Parton died on August 25 at the age of 80<\/a>, following what her representatives described as a \u201cbrief battle with cancer\u201d. According to Rolling Stone<\/a>, she recorded her vocals for \u2018Torn\u2019 in June, just two months before her death.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen she got ill, she got out of her bed to sing this song,\u201d Bono told the publication, adding that he now finds the recording difficult to listen to.<\/p>\n

\u2018Torn\u2019 was co-written by U2, Parton and Snow Patrol<\/a>\u2019s Johnny McDaid. Bono initially approached the country icon about contributing to a separate, as-yet-unreleased project inspired by Irish folk music, but Parton felt the material was too Irish for her and instead offered him a song of her own called \u2018Torn\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Bono and McDaid then reworked the lyrics around the perspective of a mother watching her family fracture, and Parton agreed to sing the new version. Bono said she gave the recording everything she had, while Daniel Lanois contributed pedal steel guitar.<\/p>\n

Parton was also able to hear and approve the final mix before her death. \u2018Carnaval De Luz\u2019 producer Jacknife Lee<\/a> told Rolling Stone that she was proud of her vocal and thrilled with the finished recording.<\/p>\n

U2 had paid tribute to Parton shortly after her death, sharing a post on Instagram that teased at the song, writing: \u201cEvery heart is torn\u201d.<\/p>\n

The band had a longstanding friendship with Parton. In January, Bono surprised her on her 80th birthday by sending a bagpiper to perform for her<\/a>, along with a birthday cake and a pint of Guinness.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, U2 were named MusiCares\u2019 2027 Persons Of The Year<\/a>, following in Parton\u2019s footsteps after she received the same honour in 2019. Bono himself was named MusiCares Person Of The Year in 2003.<\/p>\n

Parton remained a prolific collaborator in the final years of her life. In 2025, she joined Sabrina Carpenter for a new version of \u2018Please Please Please\u2019<\/a>, while her 2023 album \u2018Rockstar\u2019<\/a> featured a huge cast of guests.<\/p>\n

Among them were Miley Cyrus on a new version of \u2018Wrecking Ball\u2019<\/a> and Stevie Nicks on \u2018What Has Rock And Roll Ever Done For You\u2019<\/a>, which Nicks had originally written for Fleetwood Mac.<\/p>\n

The record also featured Paul McCartney<\/a>, Ringo Starr<\/a>, Elton John<\/a>, Sting<\/a> and dozens more. It went on to become the highest-charting album of Parton\u2019s career<\/a>, reaching Number Three on the Billboard 200.<\/p>\n

In NME\u2019s four-star review<\/a>, Jordan Bassett described \u2018Rockstar\u2019 as \u201cbursting with life and positivity as the woman who made it\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u2018Carnaval De Luz\u2019, meanwhile, arrives during U2\u2019s 50th anniversary year and marks their first full-length album of new material since 2017\u2019s \u2018Songs Of Experience\u2019.
