A man died after overdosing on caffeine tablets and suffering a cardiac arrest, an inquest has heard.<\/p>\n
Alfie Goddard, 25, bought caffeine capsules online and took them before his death on October 28, 2025.<\/p>\n
He was rushed to hospital after he was spotted in a delirious state walking barefoot and vomiting blood in the street, but sadly died of a cardiac arrest in hospital.<\/p>\n
Mr Goddard, who lived with ADHD, drug-induced psychosis<\/a>, paranoid schizophrenia, and autism<\/a>, lived in a supported accommodation block in Colchester, Essex<\/a>.<\/p>\n At Essex Coroner\u2019s Court, coroner Lincoln Brookes ruled his death as accidental.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tSign up for all of the latest stories\t\t\t<\/p>\n Start your day informed with Metro’s News Updates<\/a> newsletter or get Breaking News<\/a> alerts the moment it happens. <\/p>\n The court heard that a toxicology report had found Alfie with a concentration of caffeine \u2018well within the fatality bracket\u2019 associated with caffeine-related deaths.<\/p>\n Alfie had tried to call 999 while experiencing the psychotic episode on the day of his death, but he was unable to speak clearly, and members of staff at International House, his supported living complex, called emergency services instead.<\/p>\n Paramedics and police arrived to attempt to restrain him and took him to hospital, but he sadly died. A police search of his room found an array of caffeine tablets.<\/p>\n Inspector Tom Bastendorff from Essex Police<\/a> said: \u2018The items seized from Alfie\u2019s flat were several capsules which contained caffeine. It is my belief he took these capsules, which led to the erratic behaviour.\u2019<\/p>\n Craig Capener, from the Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust, said the hospital had been unaware of the quantities and types of caffeine he was buying.<\/p>\n Mr Goddard\u2019s sister Daisy said Alfie had an \u2018addictive personality\u2019 and had been unaware of the harmful effects of caffeine.<\/p>\n She told the inquest: \u2018His vulnerabilities made it very dangerous when he could and would buy one product he wanted online. He ordered in bulk and became fixated on various supplements and health<\/a> products despite the family\u2019s attempts to moderate his consumption.\u2019<\/p>\n Concluding the inquest, coroner Lincoln Brookes said: \u2018Alfie Goddard inadvertently died of caffeine toxicity, having taken a large number of caffeine tablets at his home earlier that day.<\/p>\n \u2018He had been diagnosed for a number of years with paranoid schizophrenia, autistic spectrum disorder, and ADHD against a background of polysubstance misuse.\u2019<\/p>\n Alfie\u2019s sister has remembered him as \u2018kind and sensitive\u2019, adding: \u2018We miss him every day. He faced complex mental health<\/a> challenges, but was resilient and a true one-of-a-kind.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u2018Alfie\u2019s autism and ADHD<\/a> made him vulnerable to substance misuse, including caffeine and health supplements.<\/p>\n \u2018His accidental death underscores the danger of unlabelled caffeine tablets and powders that can be bought easily online. These are super-strong with questionable origin, but because they\u2019re legal, people don\u2019t realise how dangerous they are.\u2019<\/p>\n A spokesperson for International House said: \u2018Alfie is greatly missed by everyone who knew him, and our thoughts remain with his family and friends at this very sad and difficult time.<\/p>\n \u2018To honour his memory, we have created a memorial garden where his friends and loved ones can spend time and remember him.
