\n A media report says that some billionaires with UK tax
\n obligations are pushing back against sweeping requests for
\n information from authorities exploring their wealth and financial
\n structures.<\/p>\n
Letters sent by HM Revenue and Customs seeking detailed data on
\n assets, investments and financial structures raise worries
\n whether these requests are legal, and raise fears about costs,
\n Bloomberg reported.<\/p>\n
The UK tax authority sent letters to all billionaires with a UK
\n tax footprint this summer, appointing\u00a0a so-called customer
\n compliance manager to each billionaire. In 2025, a cross-party
\n Parliamentary committee found that the tax authority had an
\n incomplete grasp of billionaires\u2019 financial affairs.<\/p>\n
Bloomberg Tax said it has seen extracts of these
\n letters. They show that HMRC wants to build a comprehensive
\n picture of billionaires\u2019 financial lives, spanning business
\n interests and investments to wider structures holding their
\n wealth. HMRC has also reached out to seek meetings with some
\n billionaires before they file their tax returns, the report
\n said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The story comes at a time when the current Labour government\u2019s
\n tax increases and policies have encouraged some wealthy
\n individuals, such as hedge fund manager Chris Rokos, to leave the
\n UK. These departures fuel worries that the UK\u2019s tax base is
\n eroding and will reduce, not boost, tax revenues. At the heart of
\n this point is the so-called \u201cLaffer Curve\u201d effect: higher taxes,
\n beyond a certain point, can be self-defeating. The issue is
\n politically sensitive because advocates of tax increases claim
\n they are needed to achieve a fairer distribution of wealth.

\n Advisors and lawyers quoted by the news service said clients are
\n sometimes responding politely to information requests, but others
\n are declining to do so.
