This particular association was only true in women, not men.

The link might seem a little random, but sports medicine physicians say they’re not shocked. They had participants complete questionnaires about their daily routines, including exercise habits, and also fill out a test called the Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test. (When it comes to the Schutte Self-Report test, higher scores suggest that someone has a higher emotional intelligence.)

Researchers then took that data and grouped participants’ activity based on how hard they exercised (sedentary, light, moderate, and vigorous). After analyzing the data, the researchers found that emotional intelligence scores increased with age in both men and women.

In general, women had higher emotional intelligence scores than men and were more likely to report that they did light-intensity physical activity. But when the researchers stacked emotional intelligence against the different levels of physical activity, they discovered that higher emotional intelligence scores in women were linked to more time spent doing vigorous physical activity and less time being sedentary. This was true regardless of age. (The researchers didn’t find the same association in men.)

Why is there a link?

It’s hard to say, even for doctors. “It’s likely multifactorial and nuanced,” says Michael Richardson, MD, a family medicine and sports medicine physician in the greater Boston area. “It’s hard to draw specific conclusions about why emotional intelligence was linked to more vigorous physical activity in women, but less so in men.”

Bert Mandelbaum, MD, a sports medicine specialist at Cedars-Sinai Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine in Los Angeles and author of The Win Within: Capturing Your Victorious Spirit, agrees. However, he suggests that people with higher levels of emotional intelligence may be better dialed into the fact that the more they put into an exercise routine, the more they’ll get out of it. High emotional intelligence is also linked to being able to navigate stressful situations better, which may also explain the link, he says.

What is ‘vigorous’ exercise?

The study relied on participants to report their own exercise routines, along with how often they worked out and how hard. But, in general, “vigorous” exercise means your heart rate is elevated, you’re out of breath, and you’re putting in some solid effort. Activities like running, swimming laps, and biking hard all qualify, according to the Mayo Clinic.

What’s the takeaway here?

No one is saying that if you work out harder at the gym you’ll develop more emotional intelligence—this study just found an association between self-reported exercise levels and emotional intelligence. But vigorous exercise is good for you—even without this newest link.

“Exercise already has many known psychological and physical benefits. This study adds another interesting layer to how physical activity may connect with our social and emotional health,” Dr. Richardson says.

Dr. Mandelbaum also emphasizes that everyone can be an athlete. “We all have the capacity to push ourselves hard to have more success,” he says.
