A portrait of The 1975<\/a> frontman Matty Healy<\/a> has been shortlisted for the 2026 British Photography Awards. Check it out below.<\/p>\n

Newcastle photographer Neil Ferry, 56, took the picture while Healy was rehearsing for his performance at the\u00a0Sunday For Sammy charity show<\/a> in the city this February (via BBC News<\/a>).<\/p>\n

He took the image in just a couple of minutes, and has described<\/a> the piece as his \u201cvision of a timeless portrait, using light, tone and texture to create an atmosphere that feels removed from contemporary publicity photography\u201d.<\/p>\n

Ferry\u2019s portrait is one of three photos he is shortlisted for at this year\u2019s British Photography Awards. The winners are set to be announced on Sunday November 1.<\/p>\n

The photographer only started taking pictures at the age of 48, and subsequently enrolled on a BA at Newcastle College.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I went in, [Healy] was really busy, lovely, lovely guy and he said, \u2018Look, you know, I\u2019m rehearsing, but I\u2019ve got a couple of minutes before I go home\u2019,\u201d Ferry explained. \u201cI literally only had a minute to do the photo.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to say that the musician was \u201creally tired\u201d from his long rehearsals, \u201cbut that really made the photograph, in my opinion\u201d. Ferry added: \u201cAnd I loved the fact that he was a bit weary; I just think it really makes the photo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Healy\u2019s father, Auf Wiedersehen, Pet actor Tim Healy, was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, and is one of the founders of Sunday For Sammy. Launched in 2000, the event honours Auf Wiedersehen, Pet\u2018s Sammy Johnson, who died in 1998. It raises funds for young creative talent across the North East of England.<\/p>\n

Matty Healy covered The La\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0and brought out\u00a0Lewis Capaldi<\/a> at this year\u2019s edition, while playing renditions of The 1975\u2019s \u2018About You\u2019 and \u2018It\u2019s Not Living If It\u2019s Not With You\u2019. Sting<\/a> took to the stage to play a version of The Police<\/a>\u2018s \u2018Message In A Bottle\u2019, too.<\/p>\n

The 1975 have\u00a0told fans that two new albums are in the works<\/a>.\u00a0One of these records will be called \u2018DOGS\u2019, a word the band cryptically flashed on screen<\/a>\u00a0at the end of their\u00a0Glastonbury headline performance<\/a>\u00a0last year.<\/p>\n

The word was also displayed on drummer George Daniels\u2019 drum kit throughout the show, leading some to think it may be the title of an upcoming LP.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe made two [albums],\u201d Healy said late last year. \u201cIt might be one, it might be two\u2026 but yeah, we\u2019ve made two albums.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The band\u2019s manager Jamie Oborne previously claimed that\u00a0The 1975\u2019s next record would be \u201cpretty extraordinary\u201d<\/a>, saying: \u201cI don\u2019t know when it will come out, but they\u2019re making one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Confirming that the project had a \u201cconstant discourse about it\u201d, Oborne said: \u201cI think they\u2019ve earned the right to take their time. The world\u2019s gonna be listening, so it needs to be right.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 1975\u2019s fifth and latest full-length album, \u2018Being Funny In A Foreign Language\u2019, arrived in 2022. NME\u00a0gave it a four-star review<\/a>, hailing the group for being \u201cback to their very best\u201d.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, The 1975 tribute band The 9075 have spoken out about performing at Healy\u2019s stag do in Malibu this summer<\/a>, saying they were sworn to \u201cabsolute secrecy\u201d.
