Flu season is on the way with hospitals already seeing an uptick in patients with symptoms such as fever, body aches, a dry cough or sore throat. The most recent national flu<\/a> and Covid<\/a> surveillance report for England from the UK Health Security Agency found that flu activity has increased and it \u201cis circulating at baseline levels\u201d.<\/p>\n

It also noted that A&E attendances for flu-like illness had increased and were above seasonally expected levels. As winter looms, Claire Nevinson, Boots\u2019 superintendent Pharmacist, has shared her top advice for avoiding the virus.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cWhen flu season comes back around, I would always recommend getting a flu vaccine, even if not eligible on the NHS service. Getting your flu jab<\/a> is the best way to keep you, and the people around you, protected from getting flu, especially during winter<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Almost 19 million people had their flu vaccinations last winter, according to the NHS<\/a>, helping to avoid around 104,000 hospital admissions. Ms Nevinson recommended having the jab in the autumn months to give time for protection to set in before infections become more prevalent.<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cAfter you\u2019ve received the jab, it usually takes around 10 to 14 days for optimum protection so it\u2019s best to book your vaccination as early as you can.\u201d Millions of children and pregnant women have been able to get their NHS flu vaccinations<\/a> since September 1.<\/p>\n

Other eligible groups, such as people over 65, people with long-term conditions, care home<\/a> residents and carers will start receiving theirs from October 1. The jab is also available privately from many high street and independent pharmacies.<\/p>\n

Flu patterns in the UK often mimic those observed earlier in the year in Southern Hemisphere countries such as Australia, where the flu season runs from May to September.<\/p>\n

This year, Australia has seen an unusual late-winter surge with high cases extending into September. More than 31,000 flu cases were reported in the two weeks to September 6, up 27% on the previous fortnight. However, total cases remain significantly lower than this time last year.<\/p>\n

For those who are unlucky and do catch flu this winter, Ms Nevinson recommends resting at home, keeping warm and drinking plenty of water. She added: \u201cI\u2019d also recommend practicing good hygiene as this can also help stop the spread of flu.<\/p>\n

“Wash your hands regularly with warm water and soap, especially after coughing, sneezing, or touching shared surfaces. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then bin used tissues straight away. If you don\u2019t have a tissue, use the inside of your elbow.<\/p>\n

\u201cClean frequently touched surfaces such as phones, keyboards and door handles, and avoid close contact with others while you\u2019re unwell is also important. Try to stay at home until you feel better and stay off work or school if you have a high temperature or don\u2019t feel well enough to do your usual activities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Medicines can also help to relieve symptoms of flu.
