His fans deserved something bigger than that, but occasionally he would stumble on a melody that was absolutely spotless from the moment that he sang it.

‘So You Want to Be a Rock ‘n’ Roll Star’ was one of the greatest tunes that he ever made with The Byrds, and even when he began working with Stephen Stills and Graham Nash, tunes like ‘Guinnevere’ had all of the complexity that he was looking for, but nothing too complicated to steer away the average folk rock fan.

He still knew to keep the audience in mind whenever he made one of his records, but it was more about how he defined what he was doing once he picked up a guitar. There were no rules for where he could go, and sometimes it worked better for him to make a couple of tunes that had more to do with the jazz greats that he was listening to or take a page out of Joni Mitchell’s playbook and start detuning the strings on his guitar.

All that mattered was for him to keep things fresh whenever he made a new album, but there were also more than a few times when Crosby was down for the count before he went into the studio. If I Could Only Remember My Name was the sound of him picking up the pieces of his broken heart after his girlfriend passed away, and sometimes the biggest help came from what was going on in the background.

The album was already gorgeous from a sonic perspective, but it helped to have people like Jerry Garcia on hand to help flesh out the sound of the record. The Grateful Dead guru had already worked his magic on songs like ‘Teach Your Children’, but Crosby remembered stumbling upon one melody that was so beautiful that he knew that nothing that he said could do justice to what he was singing.

He needed to get it down on record immediately, and given that it turned into the song ‘Song With No Words (Tree With No Leaves)’, saying, “I had a melody in a tuning that I liked. I loved the set of changes. I thought it was pretty. I didn’t have words for it, so I decided I was just going to horn-stack it with my voice. When I listened to it afterwards, I felt it was complete. I didn’t feel like it lacked anything. I loved it.”

Further reading: From The Vault

And when you listen to the song in the context of the record, it makes sense to have no words for most of the track. Crosby was still using his voice as an instrument during the melodic section, but given how heartbroken he was during this time, this is the kind of tune that tells the entire story of what he was trying to say without needing to be too verbose every single time he stepped up to the microphone.

The rest of the world may have skipped to the next track when they found out it was an instrumental, but it’s not like Crosby needed to articulate what he was saying in one way. Anyone can have a melody in their hearts, and the only thing that he could hope to do was sing the kind of emotions that he was going through and hope that it found an audience.

ADD AS A PREFERRED SOURCE ON GOOGLE

Credit: Far Out / Glenn Francis Sat 26 September 2026 22:00, UK David Crosby didn’t bother trying to…

[28
42201,162942,50550,96,19989,33435,57009,93870,49659,128,56,54,55
post-783782","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-music","tag-1970s","tag-162942","tag-david-crosby","tag-entertainment","tag-folk","tag-grateful-dead","tag-heartbreak","tag-instrumental","tag-jerry-garcia","tag-music","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
