{"id":78414,"date":"2025-08-19T18:58:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-19T18:58:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/78414\/"},"modified":"2025-08-19T18:58:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T18:58:08","slug":"tour-du-limousin-perigord-thomas-gachignard-wins-stage-1-as-breakaway-stays-clear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/78414\/","title":{"rendered":"Tour du Limousin-P\u00e9rigord: Thomas Gachignard wins stage 1 as breakaway stays clear"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"03963bf2-d49c-4e41-a276-db26a9db3b62\">Thomas Gachignard (Team TotalEnergies) won a two-up sprint to the finish line to win the opening stage at the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/tour-du-limousin-perigord-nouvelle-aquitaine\/\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/tour-du-limousin-perigord-nouvelle-aquitaine\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tour du Limousin-P\u00e9rigord-Nouvelle Aquitaine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Launching his sprint first from about 400 metres out, he held off late-race breakaway companion and runner-up Ewen Costiou (Ark\u00e9a-B&amp;B Hotels) in La Courtine.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"03963bf2-d49c-4e41-a276-db26a9db3b62-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Although chasers Alexandre Delettre (Total Energies) and Andrea Vendrame (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) weren&#8217;t able to make it across to the leaders, they managed to stay ahead of the chasing peloton by a whisker and crossed the finish line to claim third and fourth place, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>Gachignard leads the overall classification as the race heads into stage 2&#8217;s 174.3km race from Thiviers to the summit of Gr\u00e8zes (Les C\u00f4teaux P\u00e9rigourdins) on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The opening stage of the four-day Tour du Limousin-P\u00e9rigord-Nouvelle Aquitaine was no simple affair, with a route that included three categorized ascents in the final third of the 184.6km race from Panazol to La Courtine. While the course was undulating throughout, the final climbs happened in succession over C\u00f4te de Liffaud, C\u00f4te d&#8217;Abbas-F\u00e9niers and C\u00f4te de la Croid de la Mission.<\/p>\n<p>An early breakaway included Simon Guglielmi (Ark\u00e9a-B&amp;B Hotels), Pablo Lospitao (Caja Rural-Alea), Iv\u00e1n Cobo (Equipo Kern Pharma), Joan Albert Riera (Illes Balears Arabay), Th\u00e9o Delacroix (St Michel-Preference Home-Auber93) and Kenny Molly (Van Rysel Roubaix).<\/p>\n<p>The riders gained nearly two minutes on the peloton as TotalEnergies and Intermarch\u00e9-Wanty, but that dropped to under a minute with around 60km remaining.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">The latest race content, interviews, features, reviews and expert buying guides, direct to your inbox!<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The breakaway pushed on, but as the roads became more challenging and the bulk of the climbing in view, Riera was the first rider to be distanced, leaving six riders out front.<\/p>\n<p>They held a slim lead over the first of three climbs, C\u00f4te de Liffaud, but they were reeled back in to the main peloton on the C\u00f4te d&#8217;Abbas-F\u00e9niers and a new breakaway forming that included Geoffrey Bouchard (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Ewen Costiou (Ark\u00e9a-B&amp;B Hotels), Sylvain Moniquet (Cofidis), Alexandre Delettre and Thomas Gachignard (both Team TotalEnergies), Axel Mariault (CIC-U-Nantes) and Andrea Mifsud (Nice M\u00e9tropole C\u00f4te d&#8217;Azur).<\/p>\n<p>The seven riders extended their lead to half a minute on the roads toward the final climb, C\u00f4te de la Croix de la Mission, but with Groupama-FDJ joining the efforts at the front of the peloton, their gap was reduced to just 20 seconds over the top and inside 10km to go.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Costiou and Gachignard attacked on the narrow, winding roads inside the last five kilometres.
