{"id":784146,"date":"2026-09-27T09:56:09","date_gmt":"2026-09-27T09:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/784146\/"},"modified":"2026-09-27T09:56:09","modified_gmt":"2026-09-27T09:56:09","slug":"jersey-zoo-orangutan-nettie-was-a-notorious-people-watcher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/784146\/","title":{"rendered":"Jersey Zoo orangutan Nettie was a &#8216;notorious people-watcher&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A Sumatran orangutan who lived in various zoos during her life developed a love for people-watching, keepers have said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Anette, better known as Nettie, whose final home was Jersey Zoo, where she lived for 15 years, was also known as being a &#8220;very soft mum&#8221; after she gave birth to her baby Jantho in 2013.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Jersey Zoo&#8217;s director of operations Mark Habben said Nettie was a notorious people-watcher who was &#8220;was intrigued by all the comings and goings and, if anyone came into her enclosure, she observed them all&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Habben also revealed another soft side of the orangutan, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cxr50p1y4v1yo\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">who died earlier this month<\/a> age 43: &#8220;She was a really good mum but probably a bit too soft.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Habben said it had been amazing to hear all the stories about Nettie from the public, former keepers and vets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He said: &#8220;She was such an incredible ambassador for her species, and an animal who everyone loved. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The keeper team here all really enjoyed working with her and many great ape keepers cut their teeth working with Nettie.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Janto and the other apes in Nettie&#8217;s group had shown signs of mourning, although they appeared to go through the process quicker than humans, Habben added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A Sumatran orangutan who lived in various zoos during her life developed a love for people-watching, keepers have&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":784147,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[26],"tags":[90,56,54,55,4407],"class_list":["post-784146","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-wildlife","tag-science","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom","tag-wildlife"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/784146","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=784146"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/784146\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/784147"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=784146"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=784146"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=784146"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
