Madonna<\/a> has never been one to feel daunted by any collaborator in her decades-long career.<\/p>\n

It takes a certain kind of guts and unwavering sense of pop destiny to forge the iconic stature she did. While somewhat nudged out of the way by Michael Jackson\u2019s dizzying deification, Madonna was overwhelmingly the premier star of the 1980s, as she wielded the emerging music video format as a major arm of her rise and rise, possessed with a God-given knack for sensing the cultural pulse of the time.<\/p>\n

Such a sharp artistic antenna was helped by an ear to the ground on hot producers and DJs who could shape her ideas to not merely reflect contemporary trends, but actively dictate those trends. Mark Kamins polished her debut single \u2018Everybody\u2019, Shep Pettibone elevated \u2018Vogue\u2019 to a house classic<\/a>, Nellee Hooper coated Bedtime Stories in trip-hop languor, and William Orbit sculpted the ambient electronic expanse of Ray of Light.<\/p>\n

Keenly surrounding herself with artists off the beaten track served Madonna well, but for 2008\u2019s Hard Candy, she decided to recruit the services of the current Billboard batterers in the game. \u201cI always go, \u2018OK, who\u2019s making music that I like right now?\u2019 she said to Rolling Stone at the time<\/a>. \u201cI really, genuinely like the music of Timbaland and Justin [Timberlake]. Justin is a brilliant songwriter. I mean, \u2018What Goes Around\u2026 Comes Around\u2019? Brilliant. I thought it would be a challenge to work with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

A challenge? It\u2019s difficult to imagine Madonna facing any professional anxiety working with such mainstream figures. Alongside Timbaland\u2019s chunky production and Timberlake\u2019s songwriting chops, Pharrell Williams lends lyrical and studio assistance<\/a>, plus Kanye West contributes some rap parts. But the late 2000s were a curious chapter for the \u2018Queen of Pop\u2019, if the crown still fit at all.<\/p>\n

You can\u2019t argue with the commercial impact. Hard Candy topped charts all over the world, including the UK and the US, and continued a resurgence triggered by the prior Confessions on a Dance Floor after American Life\u2019s critical wobble.<\/p>\n

Yet few would honestly agree that Madonna was still at the forefront of innovation. There was a time in recent pop cultural memory when each new collaboration, stylistic U-turn, or aesthetic jump prompted major cultural commentary, whereas Hard Candy\u2019s peppermint boxer failed to stand tall against \u2018Ray of Light\u2019s stripped-down double denim abandon or the old Hollywood glamour of \u2018Vogue\u2019.<\/p>\n

A listen to Hard Candy nearly 20 years on reveals a time capsule of the pop climate<\/a> rather than the prescient weathervanes of prior records. It\u2019s what Madonna wanted, kind of. \u201cWho\u2019s making music that I like right now?\u201d turned into merely \u2018Who\u2019s making music right now?\u2019, which naturally delivered a record that stands alongside every other artist the gaggle of chosen producers had laid their studio fingerprints on.<\/p>\n

Madonna\u2019s still capable of cutting some inspired detours, as moments on 2019\u2019s Madame X attest to, but Hard Candy will stand as a record of stylistically going through the motions, whatever the intimidation felt at sharing the studio with some of the day\u2019s biggest stars.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
