{"id":784360,"date":"2026-09-27T15:08:09","date_gmt":"2026-09-27T15:08:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/784360\/"},"modified":"2026-09-27T15:08:09","modified_gmt":"2026-09-27T15:08:09","slug":"canterbury-alcohol-licence-rejected-after-police-objection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/784360\/","title":{"rendered":"Canterbury alcohol licence rejected after police objection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A shisha bar has had its alcohol licence application rejected after police lodged an objection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The owner of Diamond Shisha Lounge in Canterbury had applied to sell alcohol from 12:00 to 23:00 every day to boost the struggling business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Canterbury City Council threw out the plans following Kent Police&#8217;s submission, which included images appearing to show shisha pipes near a disused toilet covered in cling film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/lnp\/ldrs\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Local Democracy Reporting Service<\/a> (LDRS), the lounge&#8217;s owner, Daniel Sbhatlab, said the site had been cleaned since, adding: &#8220;It&#8217;s clean now, it&#8217;s not like before now I changed everything. I refreshed the place.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Kent Police cited suspected drug activity, antisocial behaviour and public urination, and said the owner&#8217;s knowledge of licensing rules was &#8220;wholly inadequate&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">PC Dani Rolfe told the licensing committee on Wednesday that behaviour around the lounge was fuelling community concerns and placing further demands on police resources.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The police objection also identified &#8220;areas of concern both internally and externally, particularly regarding hygiene standards and the storage and preparation of shisha products&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The application was also objected to by three residents.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A shisha bar has had its alcohol licence application rejected after police lodged an objection.
