\n\tTaylor Swift<\/a> received the inaugural Artist Director Honors at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards<\/a> Sunday night (Sept. 27), dedicating the win to her fans before having MTV broadcast the world premiere of her latest music video, \u201cPatient Zero.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI got to start making music videos and being a part of music videos 20 years ago, and since then I\u2019ve gotten to be a part of making 60 music videos, roughly 60,\u201d said Swift, holding a Moon Person and wearing a black and silver Tamara Ralph Couture dress on the VMAs stage at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, where she gave a brief acceptance speech. \u201cEighteen of those I wrote and directed, and I really love writing and directing music videos. I gotta tell you, though, the main reason why I love writing and directing music videos so much is because you, the fans, make it so much fun. You make it so rewarding. You actually care about what we\u2019re making.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe continued, \u201cI want to say thank you to everyone who ever worked on a music video that I got to be a part of. I learned something from every single person that ever worked alongside me on one of these projects.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMainly I want to say thank you to the fans, and rather than saying anything else,\u201d Swift said, \u201cI think rather than keep talking I would love to, if it\u2019s OK with you, show you my latest music video, starring my friend Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDakota Johnson, who co-stars in Swift\u2019s \u201cPatient Zero\u201d unveiled during the VMAs, presented her friend Swift with the honor, introducing the star as \u201cnot only one of the most decorated artists in the history of the VMAs\u201d but the \u201csingle most recognized video director.\u201d Johnson said Swift \u201cis storyteller\u201d who \u201cstill holds the artistry and the cardinal virtue to never lose sight of the ineffable magic magic spark at the center of it all.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter the intro, a behind-the-scenes segment of Swift making many of her music videos, and the thank-you speech, Johnson and Swift stayed on stage to tune in to the \u201cPatient Zero\u201d video premiere with everyone else in the room.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Artist Director Honors launched this year to recognize \u201cgroundbreaking music artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video and advanced the art of visual storytelling,\u201d according to the original announcement of the honor<\/a>. It \u201ccelebrates a sustained and influential body of work from artists who have pushed creative boundaries and developed a clear directorial voice.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSwift\u2019s past credits as a music video director include \u201cOpalite,\u201d \u201cThe Fate of Ophelia,\u201d \u201cFortnight,\u201d \u201cKarma,\u201d \u201cLavender Haze,\u201d \u201cBejeweled,\u201d \u201cAnti-Hero,\u201d \u201cWillow,\u201d \u201cCardigan\u201d and more. She also directed All Too Well: The Short Film. Her collection of directed projects can be found on her official website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tBefore this year\u2019s VMAs, Swift was already the recipient of a total of 30 Moon Persons. Four of those were wins in the best direction category.<\/p>\n
