Others held their nose from the stench | Western Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Multiple sharks have been spotted swimming near a large, smelly whale carcass that has washed ashore at a popular capital city beach, drawing hundreds of onlookers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Surf lifesavers found the dead animal at Perth\u2019s City beach at about 7.30am on Monday and raised the alarm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Local authorities closed the beach for several kilometres in each direction of the carcass, which appeared to be about six metres long.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Multiple sharks have been spotted in the area, including a five-metre great white.<\/p>\n<p><a data-link-name=\"standard link button Primary\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" class=\"dcr-rh233e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for the Breaking News Australia email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cIt is possible the carcass will continue to act as an attractant that could lead to sharks coming in close to shore along this stretch of coast,\u201d the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development warned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cPeople should exercise additional caution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The whale was found on Monday morning.  Photograph: Richard Wainwright\/AAP<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The alerts come 10 days after 63-year-old Greg O\u2019Neill was killed in a shark attack while swimming close to shore at Perth\u2019s Sorrento beach, about 12km north of City beach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Hundreds of onlookers gathered on Monday to view the whale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cIt\u2019s sad, they\u2019re such a beautiful animal,\u201d a local, David Jones, said. Several dead whales had washed up on the same stretch of coast in the previous decade, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Many onlookers took selfies in front of the massive carcass, while others held their noses to protect themselves from the stench.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The silhouettes of sharks could be seen in the waves, swimming up and down the coast.<\/p>\n<p>Onlookers gathered at City beach in Perth.
