The song arrived ahead of the seven-track project, due October 23 via MCA\/Goat Island Sound, and serves as the fourth chapter in a chronological breakup story.<\/p>\n<p>Written by Hackworth with Gabe Foust and Danny Majic and produced by Daniel Ross, \u201cLast Night I Got Lonely\u201d centers on an impulsive return to an ex\u2019s doorstep after a few drinks. In the EP\u2019s sequence, it follows the title track, \u201cI Wanna Quit\u201d and \u201cBad As I Do,\u201d moving the story from the initial breakup through frustration and longing. Later songs include \u201cHelp Yourself,\u201d which finds the relationship\u2019s roles reversed after time has passed, and \u201cMess That Marlboro Made,\u201d a retrospective on the chance encounter that began the relationship.<\/p>\n<p>Hackworth said the project took shape without him initially planning to connect the songs around one breakup. \u201cThis EP is probably the most full-circle thing I\u2019ve ever done. I definitely didn\u2019t set out to write a project about a breakup\u2014it just kind of came together naturally,\u201d he said. He added that the breakup became the reason he moved to Nashville to pursue his goal of becoming a recording artist. The EP\u2019s title also reflects a question he says he has often heard after spending years working as a songwriter before releasing his own music: \u201cWhat took you so long to put out your own music?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The EP\u2019s title track has surpassed 7 million streams and is in the Top 35 at country radio, according to a press release, which also says it set a record for the most first-week adds for an artist debut. Hackworth is currently touring with Tucker Wetmore on their third run together, including an October date at Red Rocks Amphitheatre.
