{"id":785560,"date":"2026-09-28T18:56:11","date_gmt":"2026-09-28T18:56:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/785560\/"},"modified":"2026-09-28T18:56:11","modified_gmt":"2026-09-28T18:56:11","slug":"scottish-wildcat-project-celebrates-50-releases-in-highlands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/785560\/","title":{"rendered":"Scottish wildcat project celebrates 50 releases in Highlands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  On Monday, the Saving Wildcats project confirmed four wildcats were released into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/topics\/cairngorms\/?ref=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cairngorms<\/a> National Park this summer, bringing the total number released since 2023 to 50.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The programme, led by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), aims to prevent the extinction of the species in Scotland by re-establishing a viable wild population in the Highlands.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>File image of a Scottish wildcat (Image: Saving Wildcats)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Conservationists say there are encouraging signs the project is succeeding, with female wildcats giving birth in the wild for three consecutive years.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The programme has recorded 11 deaths among released wildcats, including five animals killed in road traffic collisions, which conservationists said was considered a &#8220;highly successful&#8221; mortality rate when compared to similar projects.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/news\/26586181.bbc-removes-horrible-histories-sketches-break-childrens-programmes-guidelines\/?ref=ed_latest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">BBC removes Horrible Histories sketches which break children\u2019s programmes guidelines<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Many of the wildcats killed survived in the wild for several years and produced litters before their deaths, Saving Wildcats said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Despite the progress, conservationists warn the species remains critically endangered and faces a range of threats, particularly from climate change.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The project plans to continue releases in the coming years to increase both population numbers and genetic diversity.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Future releases will include animals bred with Spanish wildcats, which are considered the closest living genetic relatives of Scotland&#8217;s wildcat.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Dr Sarah Henshall, head of conservation for the Cairngorms National Park Authority described the achievement as &#8220;a monumental step for the recovery of this iconic Scottish species&#8221;.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She added: &#8220;It is a testament to the partnerships and communities that are working to ensure wildcat survival in Scotland.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;We are proud but we all remain conscious of the difficulties wildcats still face.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/news\/26585206.humza-yousaf-reveals-didnt-sue-elon-musk-bitter-online-feud\/?ref=ed_latest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Humza Yousaf reveals why he didn&#8217;t sue Elon Musk after bitter online feud<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Dr Helen Senn, head of conservation and science programmes at RZSS, said: \u201cThe wild is a tough place for wildcats and that is before the added pressures of climate change.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;Just look to this summer where wildfires caused extensive damage to known wildcat habitats in the Cairngorms National Park.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cIt is important to continue bolstering the wildcat population through releases.
