In one of the singer\u2019s most candid moments, Graham Nash<\/a> once distilled each of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young\u2019s personality types.<\/p>\n They eclipsed The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and The Hollies. CSN, with Y on and off, became one of the essential pillars of the Woodstock era. Their brew of folk rock and shimmering harmonies peaked commercially with 1970\u2019s D\u00e9j\u00e0 Vu.<\/p>\n Yet such electric synergy was forever fraught. The egos were mammoth, the cocaine rampant, and Neil Young more or less<\/a> always had one foot out of the door. CSNY soldiered through the 1970s on a rocky course. But relationships hit breaking point on the 1974 tour and the scrapped Human Highway sessions.<\/p>\n Crosby passed away in 2023, turning the final page on the CSNY story. Nash, the old Hollies man, had watched it all unfold. A decade earlier, he\u2019d given Dan Rather his take on each bandmate.<\/p>\n \u201cDavid Crosby is one of the most unique people I know,\u201d Nash reflected. \u201cAnd I know a lot of people. He\u2019s an unbelievably unique, rare musician. He\u2019s very jazz-influenced. Strange chords, strange tunings, things I personally would, as a writer, never think of.\u201d Not only was Crosby the countercultural heart of the group, but his jazzy flavours would yield new dimensions for their West Coast sound to take intriguing forms, lending CSNY that edge over their soft rock peers in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n Then came \u2018Captain Manyhands\u2019. \u201cStephen Stills is a leader,\u201d as Nash put it. \u201cStephen Stills is a tremendous, tremendous musician, a great arranger, stubborn, won\u2019t quit until he thinks it\u2019s right, which I love about him.\u201d Earning such a moniker for his multi-instrumental dexterity<\/a>, Stills matched his musical jack-of-all-trades and soulful croon with a fierce business drive, reportedly glued to the studio for hours on end, unsurpassed by any other of the CSNY gang.<\/p>\n But what of the tempestuous, perennially half-in, half-out fourth bandmate? \u201cHe\u2019s one of the strangest friends I have,\u201d Nash wryly said of the ever-mercurial Young. \u201cCompletely dedicated to the muse of music, completely a slave to good music. Neil Young, dedicated to his family, dedicated to making the world a better place.\u201d<\/p>\n Further reading: From The Vault<\/p>\n It\u2019s about as accurate an assessment as there is. Young is well known for a fierce artistic antenna, dropping everything from backing bands to tours, if the music just isn\u2019t calling him. That restless drive, though it strained personal relationships, boasted a body of work that towers above the rest of CSNY<\/a>, and indeed much of the 1960s generation.<\/p>\n Finally, Nash turned the lens on himself. \u201cThere\u2019s a part of me that is still waiting to get found out,\u201d he mused, concluding, \u201cI\u2019m 71 years old now. I\u2019ve been doing this successfully a long time. But there\u2019s a part of my soul that doesn\u2019t quite believe that I should be here. You know, I\u2019m this poor kid from the north of England who had the wisdom to follow his parents\u2019 advice about following his heart in my passion for music.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
