Sept. 29, 1977: The Soviet Union&#8217;s Salyut 6 space station launches into orbit for long-duration spaceflights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-1d9ad602-bc2e-11f1-8f9f-8fe9521fa57a\">On Sept. 29, 1977, the Soviet Union launched its Salyut 6 space station into orbit.<\/p>\n<p>This was the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/russian-soviet-space-stations-history\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/russian-soviet-space-stations-history\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/russian-soviet-space-stations-history\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">eighth space station the Soviet Union<\/a> launched under its Salyut program and the first second-generation <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16773-first-space-station-salyut-1.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16773-first-space-station-salyut-1.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16773-first-space-station-salyut-1.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Salyut space station<\/a>. Unlike its predecessors, Salyut 6 was able to accommodate long-duration crewed missions. It launched into orbit on a Proton-K rocket.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of its five years in operation, 16 cosmonaut crews visited the station. The longest anyone stayed there was 185 days. (Image credit: NASA\/Roscosmos)<a id=\"elk-1d9ad788-bc2e-11f1-aabd-db419ac3574c\"\/>Why it mattered<a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-1d9ad7ec-bc2e-11f1-89f3-e3500a02cc4b-0\">Salyut 6 may have been the Soviet Union&#8217;s eighth space station, but it was the first of a new generation of orbital outposts designed for long-term life off <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">planet Earth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The station carried many advancements over its predecessors, including two docking ports (instead of the standard one), which allowed Salyut 6 to host a prime cosmonaut crew, as well as welcome automated <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/32645-progress-spacecraft.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/32645-progress-spacecraft.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/32645-progress-spacecraft.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Progress cargo ships<\/a> for resupply or even another <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40951-soyuz-spacecraft.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40951-soyuz-spacecraft.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40951-soyuz-spacecraft.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Soyuz spacecraft<\/a> crew for joint operations.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>Salyut 6 also included an airlock for spacewalks, allowing cosmonauts to work outside more regularly. In all, 16 Soyuz crews carrying two cosmonauts each, some from visiting countries under the Soviet Union&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/syrian-cosmonaut-muhammed-faris-obituary\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/syrian-cosmonaut-muhammed-faris-obituary\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/syrian-cosmonaut-muhammed-faris-obituary\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Interkosmos program<\/a>, visited Salyut 6 during its five-year mission life. Three spacewalks were performed, one each in 1977, 1978 and 1979. It&#8217;s legacy lives on in the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/missions\/international-space-station\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/missions\/international-space-station\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/missions\/international-space-station\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">International Space Station<\/a>, a partnership of five space agencies (NASA, Russia&#8217;s Roscosmos, and the space agencies of Europe, Canada and japan) that has spent nearly 28 years in orbit and hosted missions of up to a year.<\/p>\n<p>Want more space history?
