(Photo: Sheldrick Wildlife Trust) A baby hippo who was found alone beside his dead mother in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley has been given a second chance at life after being rescued and taken into the care of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.Bumpy was only a few days old when Kenya Wildlife Service’s veterinary and capture team received reports of an orphaned hippo in Naivasha on May 2, 2026. When rescuers arrived, they found the tiny calf beside his mother’s body.Rangers believed the mother had died the previous day, likely while trying to protect her young calf.

Baby hippo found beside his mother

<img decoding="async" alt="Bumpy shares the sanctuary with another rescued hippo, Musumbi." msid="134572503" imgsize="152862" resizemode="4" width="" title="Bumpy shares the sanctuary with another rescued hippo, Musumbi. (Photo: Sheldrick Wildlife Trust)

According to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Bumpy remained beside his mother after her death, seemingly unable to understand what had happened.“After her death, her baby remained by her side, confused and with nowhere else to go,” the rescue organization said. The calf repeatedly called out to his mother and nudged her with his nose, apparently hoping she would respond.Following what the organization described as a “logistically challenging water rescue,” Bumpy was transported to Nairobi, where he was handed over to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust for rehabilitation. His first night at the Nairobi nursery brought some much-needed comfort. He was given a warm bottle of milk and wrapped in a cherry-red blanket. Keeper Simon then placed his mattress on the floor, allowing the tiny hippo to sleep beside him. After the traumatic ordeal, Bumpy finally settled down and slept in the crook of his keeper’s arm.

Bumpy becomes attached to his keepers

<img decoding="async" alt="Bumpy was found beside his mother’s body after being orphaned in Kenya." msid="134572506" imgsize="129748" resizemode="4" width="" title="Bumpy was found beside his mother’s body after being orphaned in Kenya. (Photo: Sheldrick Wildlife Trust)

After a short stay at the nursery, Bumpy was moved to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Kaluku Unit, a sanctuary along Kenya’s Athi River. The young hippo quickly showed how much he craved companionship, remaining close to his keepers and seeking comfort from them whenever possible.“He was clearly desperate for comfort and connection and remained glued to his keepers from that moment onwards,” the organization said. Now five months old, Bumpy has become especially attached to keepers Festus and Jackson.According to Angela Sheldrick, who has led the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and its operations in Kenya since 2001, the calf surprised rescuers with how quickly he adapted.“Given the ordeal he had been through, we wondered if Bumpy would arrive quite wild, but the opposite proved to be true,” Sheldrick recalled.“He was just happy to be ‘home,’” she added, “for he very quickly made us his home.”

The little hippo’s growing circle of friends

<img decoding="async" alt="Bumpy spends his days swimming and playing at the Kaluku Unit sanctuary." msid="134572516" imgsize="135078" resizemode="4" width="" title="Bumpy spends his days swimming and playing at the Kaluku Unit sanctuary. (Photo: Sheldrick Wildlife Trust)

Bumpy has also developed a distinctive relationship with his human caregivers. Sheldrick’s field notes describe him as being “absolutely hooked” on Festus and Jackson. He follows them around like a small shadow, communicating with them through his characteristic hippo grunts. Even while swimming, he keeps an eye on his keepers, peeking above the water to monitor where they are. When he is out of the pool, Bumpy can often be found sitting between their feet or sleeping on their laps. But his growing circle of friends extends beyond the sanctuary’s human caregivers.Another rescued hippo, Musumbi, who is 18 months older than Bumpy, initially responded to the youngster’s arrival with what the trust described as polite aloofness. To avoid territorial conflicts, the two hippos have been given separate pools. They generally remain apart but occasionally greet each other by touching noses. The trust notes that hippos differ from elephants in their social structures. While elephants form multigenerational family groups in which young are raised communally, hippo pods are territory-based and can be more transient.

Buffaloes and an orphaned elephant become Bumpy’s friends

<img decoding="async" alt="The young hippo has also developed a friendship with orphaned elephant Wangalla." msid="134572540" imgsize="153238" resizemode="4" width="" title="The young hippo has also developed a friendship with orphaned elephant Wangalla. (Photo: Sheldrick Wildlife Trust)

Bumpy spends much of his time in his pool, where he splashes around and performs what the trust describes as a changing combination of dives, rolls and movements across the pool floor.Buffaloes named Gruff, Bibi and Moshi frequently visit the pool to wallow and have become closely attached to the young hippo.Bumpy has also formed a particularly sweet friendship with Wangalla, the youngest elephant at the Kaluku Unit.Like Bumpy, Wangalla was orphaned at a young age. She was eventually found hiding among a herd of zebras, apparently seeking protection.Although Wangalla generally focuses on her keeper, Misheck, she has developed an affection for Bumpy.“[Wangalla] usually only has eyes for her keeper, Misheck, but has clearly developed a soft spot for Kaluku’s littlest hippo. They make an absolutely adorable pair,” Sheldrick wrote.Wangalla appears to treat Bumpy like a younger sibling, imitating the way her own “big sister,” Korbessa, behaves toward her.

Bumpy will eventually return to the wild

The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust was established in memory of David Sheldrick, the founder and warden of Tsavo National Park, Kenya’s largest protected wildlife sanctuary. His daughter, Angela Sheldrick, has led the organization since 2001.For now, Bumpy’s days at Kaluku are filled with swimming, sleeping beside his keepers and meeting new companions. The young hippo’s story began with the devastating loss of his mother, but his rescue has given him an opportunity to grow under the care of the sanctuary.Eventually, Bumpy is expected to return to the wilds of riverine Tsavo.“Today, his days are full — splashing in his pool, sleeping by his Keeper’s side, and drawing an ever-growing circle of friends to his little corner of Kaluku,” the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust wrote. “His story with us is just beginning, but already he has made our lives so much fuller.”

The five-month-old hippo has formed a close bond with his keepers.
