fund bought her building and hiked her rent by more than 200 percent to roughly $1,880 a month, a move aimed at pushing out the long-term tenant to make way for lucrative tourist apartments.<\/p>\n<p>Madrid\u2019s tenants\u2019 union organised protests and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/video\/newsfeed\/2026\/9\/28\/hundreds-set-up-tent-encampments-in-madrid-over-housing-crisis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">encampments<\/a> in Madrid\u2019s central Puerta del Sol square, drawing tens of thousands of demonstrators before spreading to dozens of other cities.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"0\">Upon the announcement of the landlord\u2019s offer, the union celebrated what it described as a \u201chistoric win\u201d in a post on X.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"0\">The government of Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez responded to the outcry by presenting a package of measures scheduled for a parliamentary vote this Friday.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"1\">The proposal most likely to secure approval extends expired tenant safeguards through 2030, shielding vulnerable residents like Abascal from eviction over that period.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"1\">The package falls short of the protesters\u2019 demands and is likely to face opposition from conservative parties more sympathetic to landlords\u2019 interests.<\/p>\n<p>According to Spain\u2019s central bank, the country is roughly 755,000 homes short of
