{"id":787388,"date":"2026-09-30T11:56:11","date_gmt":"2026-09-30T11:56:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/787388\/"},"modified":"2026-09-30T11:56:11","modified_gmt":"2026-09-30T11:56:11","slug":"major-banks-raise-interest-rates-after-rba-lifts-cash-rate-to-highest-since-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/787388\/","title":{"rendered":"Major banks raise interest rates after RBA lifts cash rate to highest since 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Australia&#8217;s major banks will lift variable home loan rates by 0.25 per cent from next month, after the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) lifted the cash rate to its highest level in more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-09-29\/rba-lifts-rates-highest-level-in-15-years-september-2026\/107206640\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">RBA hikes interest rates to 4.6pc<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Reserve Bank increases interest rates to 4.6 per cent in its fourth rate rise this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">This week&#8217;s RBA decision took the country&#8217;s cash rate to 4.6 per cent, an increase of 0.25 per cent, and the fourth hike this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The cash rate is the highest it has been since November 2011.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Commonwealth Bank, NAB, Westpac and ANZ announced increases to home loan variable interest rates by 0.25 per cent per annum, effective October 9.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">CBA&#8217;s group executive retail banking, Angus Sullivan, said the RBA&#8217;s decision came during persistent inflation and ongoing global uncertainty, which were adding to economic pressures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Most banks acknowledged many mortgage holders may struggle with the increased payments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">NAB group executive personal banking, Ana Marinkovic, said concerned customers should contact the bank early about their finances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Westpac chief executive, consumer, Carolyn McCann, acknowledged the increase would impact households&#8217;
