An American spy satellite unexpectedly shattered into pieces, creating a cloud of debris in low-Earth orbit.<\/p>\n
The U.S. Space Force\u2019s satellite tracking system confirmed<\/a> the satellite, officially designated as USA-32, broke apart on September 13 at 5:13 p.m. ET. It was labeled as a fragmentation event, which means the satellite suddenly exploded into smaller pieces, but the cause of its unplanned breakup has yet to be identified.<\/p>\n The Space Force is currently monitoring the resulting debris and says that no immediate threats to other spacecraft have been identified. Of course, that doesn\u2019t mean this debris won\u2019t endanger satellites and other on-orbit objects in the future.<\/p>\n Eyes in the skies <\/p>\n The Cold War-era U.S. intelligence satellite launched on September 5, 1988 on board a Titan II SLV rocket. At the time, it was part of a classified program operated by the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) to establish space-based espionage for the U.S. military.<\/p>\n USA-32 was part of a series of satellites nicknamed after actress Farrah Fawcett, with this particular spacecraft designated FARRAH III under its classified program name.<\/p>\n Unlike the earlier FARRAH satellites, which were relatively small and box-shaped, FARRAH III was a large, squat cylindrical spacecraft that\u2019s been described as resembling a tuna can. These satellites were designed to intercept radio-frequency emissions, potentially including communications and other electronic signals.\u00a0<\/p>\n NRO recently declassified parts of the FARRAH program, releasing documents that provide some information on the intelligence satellites. It likely created a large cloud of debris in orbit, although the number of fragments is still unknown.<\/p>\n It\u2019s not clear why the satellite suddenly broke apart, but considering previous causes of similar events, it may have been an explosion caused by leftover propellant in its pressurized tank or a battery cell that failed. The defunct satellite may have also been struck by a traveling chunk of space debris.<\/p>\n There\u2019s no evidence to suggest that this was a deliberate act nor that an anti-satellite weapon was used to destroy USA-32.
