The Red Planet begins another circuit around the sun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-c5f049a4-bc47-11f1-aa17-699c6471f556\">Those of us still humming on back-to-school energy can add some Red Planet flavor: We just marked the beginning of a new year on Mars.<\/p>\n<p>The Martian new year officially clicked over today (Sept. 30) at 4:16 a.m. EDT (0816 GMT), when the Red Planet once again began its nearly 687-Earth-day journey around <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the sun<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-c5f049a4-bc47-11f1-aa17-699c6471f556-2\">But if you&#8217;re a Martian, you wouldn&#8217;t use <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a> days. A Mars day, or &#8220;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-curiosity-rover-4000-mars-days-water-search\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-curiosity-rover-4000-mars-days-water-search\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-curiosity-rover-4000-mars-days-water-search\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sol<\/a>,&#8221; lasts 24 hours and 39 minutes \u2014 the time it takes the Red Planet to rotate once. There are 668 sols in a Martian year.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-c5f04a26-bc47-11f1-8c14-0dee0de1b995\">Sept. 30 as New Year&#8217;s Day on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a> is something of a human construct: Astronomers chose it because Sept. 30 marks the northern equinox, when spring begins in Mars&#8217; north and autumn starts in the south.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Like Earth, Mars has four seasons \u2014 winter, spring, summer and autumn,&#8221; officials with the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Space Agency<\/a> (ESA) stated in a post <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Human_and_Robotic_Exploration\/Happy_New_Year_on_Mars\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Human_and_Robotic_Exploration\/Happy_New_Year_on_Mars\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">about the Martian new year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unlike Earth&#8217;s seasons, Martian seasons are not of equal lengths due to Mars&#8217; more elliptical orbit,&#8221; they added. &#8220;The planet&#8217;s axial tilt causes the northern hemisphere to receive more sunlight during the northern summer, and the southern hemisphere to receive more sunlight in northern winter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The strange seasons on Mars also bring a consequence: <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/mars\/mars-dust-is-toxic-how-will-future-astronauts-deal-with-it\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/mars\/mars-dust-is-toxic-how-will-future-astronauts-deal-with-it\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/mars\/mars-dust-is-toxic-how-will-future-astronauts-deal-with-it\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dust<\/a>. In the back half of the long Martian year, the Red Planet gets closer to the sun and sees <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16903-mars-atmosphere-climate-weather.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16903-mars-atmosphere-climate-weather.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16903-mars-atmosphere-climate-weather.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">its atmosphere<\/a> warm up. The warmth brings dust, as winds loft particles from the regolith on the surface.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net\/flexiimages\/dpnbewsyjn1783958986.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net\/flexiimages\/dpnbewsyjn1783958986.svg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net\/flexiimages\/dpnbewsyjn1783958986.svg\" class=\"rounded-[var(--image--border-radius,0)] w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\"\/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Once airborne, these brownish particles heat up and redistribute some of that warmth to the surrounding atmosphere.
