{"id":788450,"date":"2026-10-01T10:42:15","date_gmt":"2026-10-01T10:42:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/788450\/"},"modified":"2026-10-01T10:42:15","modified_gmt":"2026-10-01T10:42:15","slug":"how-the-last-super-el-nino-hit-london-and-what-it-could-mean-for-the-capital-this-winter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/788450\/","title":{"rendered":"How the last Super El Ni\u00f1o hit London &#8211; and what it could mean for the capital this winter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/newsletter_we_final_embed_desktop.png\" alt=\"WEST END FINAL\" width=\"175\" height=\"192\" class=\"sc-dSaOYO wuTff\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The last \u201csuper\u201d El Ni\u00f1o to hit London a decade ago brought devastating storms and freezing weather, with experts fearing this winter\u2019s will bring even worse.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/storm-desmond\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Storm Desmond<\/a> killed three people and destroyed over 5,000 homes during the winter of 2015\/16, the last time there was an El Ni\u00f1o of similar magnitude affecting the UK.<\/p>\n<p>The national forecaster is predicting a stormier start than usual to autumn and winter, and colder spells at the end of winter.<\/p>\n<p>How have previous \u2018El Ni\u00f1o\u2019 events impacted London?<\/p>\n<p>London has been battered by El Ni\u00f1os in a number of previous winters, most significantly in 2015 and 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The event brought Storm Desmond to the UK in early December, with severe gales and record-breaking rainfall hitting much of the country.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/desmond_rescue.jpg\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" alt=\"CARLISLE, ENGLAND - DECEMBER 07:  Rescue teams continue to to evacuate people from their homes after Storm Desmond caused flooding on December 7, 2015 in Carlisle, England. (Photo by Jeff J Mitchell\/Getty Images) *** BESTPIX ***\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"sc-dkPvMp YXmIZ\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Rescue teams evacuate people from their homes after Storm Desmond caused flooding in Carlisle<\/p>\n<p>Jeff J Mitchell\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Though the worst affected areas by Storm Desmond were in northern England, Scotland, and Wales, the capital also felt the force of the storm\u2019s severe winds.<\/p>\n<p>A 90-year-old man died near Finchley Central station in north London, when a gust of wind apparently blew him into the side of a moving bus, according to a Met spokesperson at the time.<\/p>\n<p>The high winds were also blamed for the 60ft Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree leaning at a noticeable angle.<\/p>\n<p>Inspectors had to carry out checks on the tree to ensure it was not a risk to the public. <\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in the UK, the record-breaking rainfall caused severe flooding across Lancashire and Cumbria, affecting around 5,200 homes.<\/p>\n<p>Several major roads across the north of England and Scotland were also flooded, and there was major disruption to rail services in the north due to a landslide closing a section of the West Coast mainline between Preston and Carlisle. <\/p>\n<p>Over 100,000 homes in northern England lost power due to the storm.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/pubstorm3.jpg\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" alt=\"Enterprise URN: AN*95211480&#13;&#10;&#13;&#10;Caption: Rubble strewn across the road outside The Duchess public house in Battersea, south west London, after Storm Katie's high winds brought down part of the building's roof support. Photo credit should read: John Stillwell\/PA Wire&#13;&#10;Loaded on: 28\/03\/2016 Loaded at: 10:38 &#13;&#10;&#13;&#10;Properties: RGB JPEG Image (24743K 1499K 16.5:1) 3500w x 2413h at 300 x 300 dpi&#13;&#10;Routing: &lt;not routed&gt;&#13;&#10;Parking: &lt;not parked&gt;&#13;&#10;&#13;&#10;Copyright: PA&#13;&#10;Provider: PA&#13;&#10;Photographer: John Stillwell&#13;&#10;&#13;&#10;Headline: Spring weather March 28th 2016&#13;&#10;\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"sc-dkPvMp YXmIZ\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Rubble strewn across the road outside The Duchess public house in Battersea after Storm Katie in March 2016<\/p>\n<p>John Stillwell\/PA Wire<\/p>\n<p>The El Ni\u00f1o-related storm that hit London the hardest was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/storm-katie\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Storm Katie<\/a>, which impacted the capital over Easter 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The storm brought intense gale-force gusts which peaked at over 100 mph along the southern coast of England and up to 85 mph inland.<\/p>\n<p>High winds bent a construction crane in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/greenwich\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Greenwich<\/a>, and dozens of roofs were damaged across the capital.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/517857316...jpeg\" width=\"2954\" height=\"4000\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"sc-dkPvMp YXmIZ\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A construction crane that was damaged overnight in high winds brought by Storm Katie in London in March 2016<\/p>\n<p>AFP\/Getty<\/p>\n<p>One X user shared a photograph of a trampoline which had been lifted from a garden by high winds and landed upside down at a bus stop in Rotherhithe. <\/p>\n<p>There were widespread transport suspensions and power cuts across South and Southeast London, with over 100,000 power outages recorded across the south of England.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Adam Scaife, Head of Long Range Prediction at the Met Office, said: \u201cWe have been signalling for months that the developing El Ni\u00f1o will be an unprecedented event. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that it has already exceeded previous records &#8211; with several weeks to go before it peaks later this year &#8211; shows the enormity of this El Ni\u00f1o. <\/p>\n<p>\u201dScientists are still assessing whether the impacts will be in proportion to its magnitude, but we are already seeing expected effects worldwide.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Super-El-Nino.jpeg\" width=\"4500\" height=\"3000\" alt=\"Map of the Pacific Ocean\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"sc-dkPvMp YXmIZ\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The El Nino is developing over the Pacific Ocean<\/p>\n<p>aapsky &#8211; stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>As the El Ni\u00f1o approaches its winter peak, there is an increased likelihood of wetter and stormier conditions across the UK during autumn and early winter, with an increased risk of cold snaps during the late winter.<\/p>\n<p>Grahame Madge, a Met Office climate spokesman, said: \u201cThe El Ni\u00f1o event is still developing in the tropical Pacific and already it has surpassed the magnitude of previous events including the one in 2015\/16.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGlobally, an El Ni\u00f1o event has several impacts, including altering rainfall patterns and increasing global temperature overall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are known teleconnections between El Ni\u00f1o and the UK autumn and winter period.
