How can we minimise our exposure to them?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The scourge of plastic pollution will continue to grow, at least for now, after talks to strike a global treaty fell apart this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It was the sixth round of such negotiations in three years, but despite a last-ditch scramble on Friday, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-15\/plastic-pollution-talks-fall-apart\/105660770\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105660770\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">delegates could not reach agreement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Meanwhile, new research continues to expose plastic&#8217;s quiet presence in our food, tap water and the air we breathe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A study published last month found <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0328011\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">higher-than-expected levels of inhalable plastic particles<\/a> in a handful of apartments and cars in France.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Recent Australian research found even <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0301479725003354?via%3Dihub\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">compost contained teeny plastic fragments<\/a>, which may eventually make their way into agricultural soils and food crops.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">These are a couple of the latest studies into microplastics: fragments or fibres of plastic between a micron (one millionth of a metre) up to 5 millimetres in size.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Microplastics can be created as a result of larger pieces of plastic shedding or breaking apart, or be added to products, such as plastic powders added to some cosmetics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Along with microplastics, there are also nanoplastics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">These are plastic particles less than a micron wide. For context, a human hair is about 50 microns in diameter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Being so tiny, nanoplastics might more easily infiltrate human cells and tissues such as our blood, &#8220;so they&#8217;re the ones scientists are interested in&#8221;, University of Queensland microplastics researcher Cassandra Rauert said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">So, considering micro- and nanoplastics are everywhere, from the <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/one-earth\/fulltext\/S2590-3322(20)30550-9\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">summit of Everest<\/a> to <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.geochemicalperspectivesletters.org\/article1829\/\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the deepest ocean<\/a>, how can we minimise our exposure without living in a cave?<\/p>\n<p>Do microplastics harm you?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The short answer is: we don&#8217;t yet know.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Part of that stems from the fact that we don&#8217;t know a whole lot about microplastics in general, such as where they come from, how many are in our environment, how they might get into our body, what they do once they&#8217;re in there, and <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0048969724059813\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">how much we excrete<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Unfortunately, microplastics is a very new field of research,&#8221; Dr Rauert said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Compared to other everyday pollutants such as pesticides, scientists don&#8217;t have a good handle on the potential effects of microplastic or nanoplastic exposure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">And current techniques to identify micro- and nanoplastics in various organs &#8220;are not perfect&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are a lot of studies reporting plastics in different parts of the human body, but there are a lot of limitations and challenges with those studies,&#8221;  Dr Rauert said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We really don&#8217;t have good data showing that plastics are ending up in our brains or our liver or our placenta and things like that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There&#8217;s a lot of reactive media to those studies and it&#8217;s causing a lot of concern, which is very understandable, but \u2026 we really don&#8217;t have a good grip on if plastics are actually getting into our bodies yet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">So what do we know? More research needs to be done, but it seems that micro- and nanoplastics can generate inflammation, Dr Rauert said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-01-15\/laundry-is-a-top-source-of-microplastic-pollution\/103321100\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Laundry is a top source of microplastic pollution<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A single wash load can release\u00a0several million plastic microfibres, but you can decrease this by changing your washing technique.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It&#8217;s not just the physical presence of plastic particles in the body that may affect our health \u2014 it&#8217;s also the chemicals they bring with them, she added: &#8220;You&#8217;re getting a double hit when you&#8217;re exposed to these things.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Such chemicals can be picked up by plastic particles from the environment, or are additives used during manufacturing that make the plastic more malleable, for instance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">These chemicals can disrupt hormones, and &#8220;there&#8217;s evidence coming out now that they&#8217;re linked to type 2 diabetes&#8221;, Dr Rauert said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s these chemicals that we \u2026 are more concerned about exposure to [than the plastic itself].&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>How to reduce microplastics in food<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Despite not yet having definitive evidence that microplastics cause harm to our health, researchers suggest avoiding them as much as possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That can be hard, considering just how much plastic is all around us all the time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Recycling arrows printed on a shopping bag with vegetables inside.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/057c3b5f3d5421b1e3d08feef106dcb9\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Soft plastics recycling trials are restarting at major supermarkets. (Unsplash: Towfiqu barbhuiya)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">When it comes to food, there is some good news: there&#8217;s probably less plastic in what we eat than originally feared.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">One of Dr Rauert&#8217;s students surveyed food a typical Australian would buy from the supermarket and <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/acsfoodscitech.4c01093\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">found low concentrations of nano- and microplastics in them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Any plastic present in food probably comes from the packaging around it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But it&#8217;s what we do with the food when we bring it home that can contribute to microplastic levels, Dr Rauert added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If you&#8217;re using a plastic chopping board, every time you use that [and] you can see it&#8217;s deforming and degrading as you&#8217;re using it, there are small pieces of plastic that are going to be coming off that board and end up in the food you&#8217;re eating.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The same goes with plastic ladles and the like. (Unsplash: Jacek Dylag)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">These plastic particles can come from any number of sources, from the water treatment process to the PVC pipes that plumb your home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Putting tap water through a filter may be helpful in removing some of the larger microplastics, Dr Rauert said, even if some of the smaller microplastics and nanoplastics slip through.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I reckon in the next couple of years there probably will be some [microplastic-filtering devices] on the market.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>How to minimise microplastics in the air<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The air inside our home and the dust that settles on surfaces could well be teeming with micro- and nanoplastics small enough to get into our lungs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Synthetic textiles such as polyester and nylon shed tiny fragments and fibres of plastic, and they are found everywhere from furniture to clothes to manchester and carpet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;A lot of our carpets are polypropylene, so when pieces of the carpet are just wearing off over time, then you&#8217;re getting small pieces of polypropylene in the air,&#8221; Dr Rauert said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It might sound boring, but wiping down dusty surfaces and vacuuming regularly can reduce microplastics in your home.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A vacuum cleaner and a pair of white sneakers on a blue and white rug.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/b61f0131473204087950a3d25cd396a5\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Your vacuum filter may not capture all microplastics, but it&#8217;ll get rid of some at least. (Unsplash: No Revisions)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Another big source of microplastics in the home, Dr Rauert said, is the clothes dryer, especially if you use it to dry synthetic materials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">As they tumble in the hot air, synthetic materials release plastic fibres that aren&#8217;t captured by the dryer filter. And if that hot air blows out into your home, it carries all those fibres with it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It&#8217;s often not available to people in apartments, but having a dryer that exhausts to the outside environment instead of inside your house can help keep microplastics down, as can avoiding using the dryer for synthetic materials altogether.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Generally, the air outside has fewer microplastics than indoor air, especially in winter when windows might remain closed to keep the warmth in.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman standing in front of an open window.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/10851656e87084a2ed492d659e9451a4\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">You might not have this view, but it&#8217;s still worth opening your windows every now and again. (Unsplash: Jametlene Reskp)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">So it&#8217;s worth periodically opening windows and doors to ventilate the air in your home and let microplastics out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While we can take individual action to keep our home environment as microplastic-free as possible, plastic pollution will continue to be a problem until large-scale changes are made, such as tougher action from governments, Dr Rauert said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There are small things we can do, but we really need a bigger, collective global effort to try and really cut down the amount of unnecessary plastic that we keep on producing every year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;You don&#8217;t actually consider how much plastic you use in your everyday life. It&#8217;s always there.
