Of course a sol is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.planetary.org\/explore\/space-topics\/mars\/mars-calendar.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Martian solar day<\/a>, about 40 minutes longer than an Earth day. Curiosity&#8217;s sol 1943 corresponds <a href=\"http:\/\/www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr\/mars\/time\/martian_time.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to Earth date<\/a> January 23, 2018. Also composed as an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.360cities.net\/image\/mars-panorama-curiosity-solar-day-1943\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">interactive 360 degree VR<\/a>, the mosaicked panorama combines 61 exposures taken by the small <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Curiosity_(rover)#\/media\/File:PIA15279_3rovers-stand_D2011_1215_D521.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">car-sized rover&#8217;s<\/a> Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI). Frames containing the imager&#8217;s arm have been edited out while the extended background used was taken by the rover&#8217;s Mastcam on sol 1903. At the top of the rover&#8217;s mast, sitting above the Mastcam, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/msl_laser_466x248.gif\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">laser-firing<\/a> ChemCam housing blocks out the distant, 5 kilometer high peak of Mount Sharp. <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mars\/curiosity-reaches-1-kilometer-elevation-gain\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">On Earth date<\/a> August 26, 2026, Curiosity marked an total elevation gain of 1 kilometer in its trek from the floor of Gale Crater up the slope of Mount Sharp.<\/p>\n<p>APOD&#8217;s email for image submissions has changed.
