Considering the cultural impact of Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, it is hard to imagine any other body of work besides The Beatles’ 1967 album defining the year any better.

When the eighth album was released on May 26th, 1967, it was an immediate sensation, revered in many forms: take the album cover alone, for instance, a vibrant collage of the band alongside a group of life-sized, cardboard cutouts of famous figures, from Bob Dylan to Marlon Brandon, Karl Marx, Marlene Dietrich, Marilyn Monroe and more.

Beyond its iconography, of course, Sgt Pepper stands as one of music’s most continually compelling concept albums. The Beatles ran wild with the production, disregarding traditional song lengths and structures in favour of theatrical flourishes inspired by the art and shock rock of the era, alongside the counterculture and its psychedelic leanings. They were thrilled at the possibilities that lay before them, and already veterans in the studio, they found a new freedom in being able to record, essentially, whatever their hearts desired.

“That was an incredible thing, because it took on its own character; it grew despite us,” their producer, George Martin, later explained the processs behind Sgt Pepper to Melody Maker in 1971, “It was a complete change of life, a very long and arduous series of recordings…,” one that was influenced, for better or for worse, by the psychedelic drugs scene burgeoning the counterculture. Much can be said about its wide-spanning cultural impact, but in 1967, its stature on the music charts would be challenged by two soon-to-be classics, in their own right.

Which albums outsold Sgt Pepper in 1967?

Two weeks before Sgt Pepper, the Jimi Hendrix Experience emerged with their debut offering, Are You Experienced, which would surpass The Beatles’ album in equivalent album sales (according to Chart Masters) by about 714,000 copies.

Are You Experienced took five months to complete, beginning in October 1966 in three locations across London. The result was a sensation in its own right; few debut albums harnessed such promise in every note, and the sheer brilliance of Hendrix’s musicianship was stunning to every listener, both those familiar and unfamiliar with his talents.

Interestingly, the album would spend 33 weeks on the charts, but would never reach the top spot, prevented only by Sgt Pepper. Three days after the latter was released, Hendrix performed at London’s Saville Theatre, opening his set with a rendition of Sgt Pepper’s title track.

Further reading: From The Vault

“The curtains flew back, and he came walking forward playing ‘Sgt Pepper,’” Paul McCartney later recalled, “It’s a pretty major compliment in anyone’s book. I put that down as one of the great honours of my career.”

Before either album, however, came The Doors’ eponymous debut, opening the year on January 4th, 1967, and surpassing Sgt Pepper by about 2,044,000 equivalent album sales, making the album chart above both The Beatles and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Jim Morrison’s setting of his poetry to his bandmates’ song, Ray Manzarek, John Densmore and Robby Krieger were seemingly effortless in their ability to soundtrack his stories, resulting in some of the most infectious music to come out of the 1960s.

Ironically, Sgt Pepper would also be the one to prevent The Doors from reaching the top of the charts, but The Doors would go on to become multi-platinum. Reportedly, McCartney acknowledged that the debut was an influence on the creation of Sgt Pepper, and The Beatles are believed to have purchased ten copies of the album for themselves.
