{"id":791022,"date":"2026-10-03T20:30:08","date_gmt":"2026-10-03T20:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/791022\/"},"modified":"2026-10-03T20:30:08","modified_gmt":"2026-10-03T20:30:08","slug":"rare-humpback-whale-spotted-on-pembrokeshire-coast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/791022\/","title":{"rendered":"Rare humpback whale spotted on Pembrokeshire coast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Lloyd Nelmes, an aquarium manger and marine project officer with Sea Trust Wales, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-wales-68036506\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spotted a humpback whale<\/a> in Pembrokeshire in 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Nelmes said: &#8220;The whale jumped out right in front of us. It was incredible, and it&#8217;s still probably my top wildlife moment of my life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He explained that humpback whale sightings were rare but not unheard of in Welsh waters, with sightings happening once every two or three years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Nelmes said the way to spot a humpback whale was by the overall shape, white pectoral fins, and knobbly skin also known as barnacles, as well as the whales&#8217; behaviour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve seen humpbacks here on the rare occasion&#8230;  but it seems to be becoming more common, which is awesome,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;It&#8217;s quite likely just an indication of how much food is about at the moment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He said he had been on an &#8220;incredible&#8221; trip out to the Celtic Deep the day before Abbot&#8217;s discovery and had seen six fin whales, tuna balling up and 1,000-plus dolphins, adding it was not too surprising that a humpack was &#8220;out there also making the most of the food&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Lloyd Nelmes, an aquarium manger and marine project officer with Sea Trust Wales, spotted a humpback whale in&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":791023,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[26],"tags":[90,56,54,55,4407],"class_list":["post-791022","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-wildlife","tag-science","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom","tag-wildlife"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/791022","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=791022"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/791022\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/791023"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=791022"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=791022"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=791022"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
