Conservative commentator Tucker Carlson<\/a> claimed that the UK fighting in World War II was not a good idea and appeared to defend elements of Adolf Hitler’s justification for invading Poland during a Friday interview with former UK business secretary Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg.<\/p>\n

During the hour-long interview, as the two debated Britain’s historical role in European conflicts and the legacy of World War II<\/a>, Carlson asserted that he \u201cnever understood why fight the Second World War in the first place,\u201d arguing that the UK should not have defended Poland from Nazi invasion because Britain \u201chad nothing to do with it at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, Hitler said that 15% of Poland was once Germany and it was given to Poland at the Treaty of Versailles,\u201d Carlson continued, claiming that he was not defending Adolf Hitler<\/a>. \u201cThat was German territory with Germans in it. That was his case. And by the way, that was true.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe UK had nothing to do with it at all. And they destroyed their empire and their country fighting this war that they still pretend was a good idea, but it wasn’t,\u201d Carlson said of Britain<\/a>‘s involvement in the Second World War.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He further alleged that \u201cthe idea that Hitler just randomly rolled into Poland is a lie\u2026 Hitler repeatedly said, \u2018I do not want to go to war with the UK,\u2019\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

Rees-Mogg expressed surprise at Carlson\u2019s remarks about Hitler.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’m very surprised you’re verging on defending Hitler. I think this is not really what you want to be doing,” he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, I guess I’m just a secret Nazi,\u201d Carlson replied before quickly asserting, \u201cI’m actually not a secret Nazi. And hardly a public Nazi. I’m just someone who tries to think clearly about cause and effect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rees-Mogg defended the UK\u2019s actions, asserting that World War II \u201cwas the classic good versus evil.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGermany would eventually have invaded us,\u201d Rees-Mogg continued.<\/p>\n

Throughout the conversation, Carlson circled back to the topic of World War II, repeatedly asking Rees-Mogg if defeating the Nazis and protecting the UK\u2019s allies were \u201cworth losing everything\u201d and \u201cdestroying all of Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n
