Some watched in awe, others in repulsion. But the point is, they watched.

What Elvis was doing wasn’t necessarily anything new. The sound and image of rock ‘n’ roll had already found plenty of ears and eyes, but he propelled that sound into the mainstream. What was a style of music that was starting to build momentum was now the biggest thing in the world, and as artists to be watched on, they used Elvis as the blueprint that would help them map out their own careers.

Of course, not every musician on Earth is a singer (thank God, as much as we love Angus Young, we don’t need to hear his rendition of ‘Jolene’). So, with that in mind, who do other musicians look at as their Elvis? Who is the person who set the blueprint for them as an artist, using which they could follow and map out their entire career? For Eric Clapton, it was Buddy Guy.

If you were to ask the usual Clapton fan what they like so much about him as a musician, they would say that it’s his limitlessness. He has never been one to stay within one specific genre, and for many, he essentially put together the image for the modern guitarist, as he took the styles of musicians past and present and bundled them all up together in a neat package. He showed that the distance between certain styles was a lot smaller than many people thought. And yet, the genre you can probably associate him with the most is the blues.

Yes, he feels closer to the blues than he does any other style of music, and with that in mind, it makes sense that his favourite artist was a connoisseur within such a genre. Buddy Guy completely epitomised what made the blues so great, as he was technically proficient, sure, but he also played with so much emotion that just a few notes and you were already sobbing.

Clapton watched him once at London’s Marquee Club, and that was an experience that really shaped his life. You see, you can listen to the blues all you want, and it sounds great, but until you’re watching it, experiencing it, breathing the same air as it, you really can’t appreciate just how powerful it is. Being in the same room as a guitarist who is pouring their breaking heart onto six strings and seeing what shape it takes is a majestic experience, and as soon as Clapton saw Guy do that, he knew the kind of music he wanted to centre his career around. Simply put, Guy was his Elvis.

Further reading: From The Vault

“All in all, everything about that night was deeply profound for me,” said Clapton when giving a speech inducting Buddy Guy into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, “The blues was clearly alive and well, and it looked good too, for as well as being the real thing, musically Buddy was a star. His suit, his hair, his moves, his sunburst Strat, everything was sharp and perfect. He was for me what Elvis probably was for most other people.”

This was more than just a flash in the pan moment for Clapton as well. He was playing in The Yardbirds at the time, but just two weeks after that Buddy Guy show, he left to pursue more blues-heavy music. When it comes to great guitarists, there’s no escaping that Buddy Guy was the blues pioneer.

ADD AS A PREFERRED SOURCE ON GOOGLE

Credit: Far Out / Showtime Documentary Films Sat 3 October 2026 22:00, UK Like him or not, Elvis…

[28
33244,37095,177456,72531,18254,96,36499,128,56,54,55
post-791218","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-music","tag-1950s","tag-blues","tag-blues-rock","tag-buddy-guy","tag-elvis-presley","tag-entertainment","tag-eric-clapton","tag-music","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
