Turki Alalshikh made a sombre admission about his health at the first press conference for the much-anticipated Battle of Britain showdown between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. Two months after pulling out of a bid to buy Derby County, Alalshikh addressed the crowd as the heavyweight icons gathered on stage ahead of their WBA heavyweight title contest in Cardiff in December.

Alalshikh, who has previously spoken about his health, said he had not been well for several months.

“I don’t know if in a couple of years I will remember this moment,” he said. “My health in the last four months is not good. I come here only for the fighters.

“I like the movie with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman – The Wish List (The Bucket List). I have the wish list in boxing and I want to deliver it before… when I can deliver it. Please help me deliver it. Please, everyone, help me to do it for the fans.”

Fury praised Alalshikh for arranging the fight against Joshua, which has been long in the making although both men are heading towards the end of their illustrious careers.

Speaking about Alalshikh, Fury said: “I’d like to take this opportunity to give a very special man a lot of credit. This fight is 10 years in the making and no one has been able to make this fight. All the big dream fights in this era have been made.

“I met this guy three years ago and he told me his dreams. Here we are. Credit to you.”

Alalshikh had made serious moves to buy Derby back at the end of May and had received the green light from the Independent Football Regulator and the Football League.

However, just an hour before the deal was due to be announced, Alalshikh did a full U-turn and explained that there was no time to prepare the squad, even though three weeks of the transfer window remained.

“I would like to thank everyone at Derby County Football Club, and everyone involved in this process for all their hard work over the past few months.

“We understood that the IFR process takes time and fully respect the importance of that, but unfortunately with the season already started, it would leave us with no time to prepare the team or the club for the season ahead.

“After careful consideration, we don’t feel it is right to proceed at this time without the necessary preparation in place, but we will remain in conversation with the club and see what is possible in the future. I personally wish the team and club every success for the season ahead.”
