The lighting was dim, the music was zen, and the décor oozed comfort and calm. My nervous system seemed to let out a big sigh, and my whole body immediately felt more grounded. It felt like I had arrived home.

Unfortunately, it didn’t last. When I tried to sign up, I was told they didn’t allow students under 18. I was heartbroken, but I walked out knowing that I would find my way back to yoga one day.

It took another decade before I fully embraced it. Within that decade, I dabbled. I tried a gym yoga class that was far too fitness-oriented; a beach holiday class where the teacher clearly didn’t want to be there; and a trendy London class where I felt like most people were there simply because yoga was cool.

I was looking for something else. I wanted yoga that connected me to myself and my well-being. I wanted something that went beyond fitness and into the mind, body, and spirit connection.

So, in the middle of a difficult breakup, I started following yoga videos on YouTube. I started, and I never really stopped. I quickly found Yoga with Adriene, whose guidance I’ve followed ever since. I’ve tried other classes and even a week-long retreat, but it’s practicing at home that I love most. Partly because my dog Bond likes to join me, adding challenges such as sitting his 34-kilogram body on me during an ab workout or licking my face when I’m in downward dog.

Mostly, though, I love being able to adapt my practice to whatever I need. Tired? I can choose a relaxing yin practice. Full of energy? I can do something more dynamic. Only have 15 minutes? There’s a quick flow for that. That’s the beauty of yoga. Over the years, it has taught me to listen to my body and give it what it needs.

All of this made me wonder: why does yoga make me feel so good?

So I dived into the research and discovered that some of what I’ve experienced is beginning to show up in the science, too.

1. Yoga brings you back into your body.

One of the things I love most about yoga is that it asks me to pay attention to what is happening inside me. How does this stretch feel? Am I holding my breath? Do I need to soften? Is my body telling me that’s enough?

This awareness of our internal bodily sensations is called interoception. A 2025 systematic review of yoga interventions found promising evidence that yoga can improve body awareness. This makes total sense to me. Yoga gives me a reason to stop thinking about everything else and simply notice what is happening here, in this body, right now.

2. Yoga can make your body feel more spacious.

Yoga obviously involves stretching, but I think there is something more subtle happening than simply becoming more flexible. With regular practice, the shoulders soften, the spine moves more freely, and you become more comfortable inhabiting your body, not just on the mat but also off the mat.

Research supports this idea. Another systematic review from 2024 found that yoga can improve spinal and shoulder mobility, although the effects varied according to the individual and the type of yoga practised. I love that yoga doesn’t ask my body to become something it isn’t. It simply gives it more space to move.

3. Yoga can help soften stress.

There is a reason I often feel calmer after yoga than I did before I started. There is a reason my dog falls asleep next to me when I’m in corpse pose. Yoga brings together movement, breathing, and attention, giving the mind fewer places to run off to. Instead of replaying yesterday or worrying about tomorrow, I concentrate on the stretch I’m in, the breath I’m taking, and the body I’m inhabiting.

Relationships Essential Reads

Studies have started to show that yoga can reduce stress and may also help with symptoms of anxiety. It might not be a magic cure, but it can help us meet stress and anxiety differently. This is one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned from yoga: not judging where I’m at, but meeting myself there and seeing how I can support myself.

4. Yoga can offer you a different relationship with yourself.

Yoga has taught me that I don’t have to push my body every day. Sometimes I need strength. Sometimes I need movement. Sometimes I need stillness. That is a surprisingly powerful lesson to take off the yoga mat.

A 2026 study of stressed adults taking part in a 12-week yoga programme found increases in self-compassion and interoceptive awareness, which were further associated with greater feelings of peace and meaning in life. Perhaps this is why yoga can feel so different from traditional forms of exercise. It isn’t asking, “What can my body do?” It’s asking, “What does my body need?” And there is a world of difference between the two.

This is why I see yoga as much more than movement. It’s a practice, a mindset, and, for me, a way of being. It has taught me to slow down enough to listen, to notice without immediately judging, and to meet myself where I am rather than constantly pushing towards where I think I should be. Maybe that is why, all those years ago, I walked into a yoga studio at 16 and felt something in me exhale. A part of me already knew what I was looking for. I was looking for a practice to bring me home to myself.

May you be healthy. May you be happy. May you be at peace, wherever you are.

When I was 16, I first walked into a yoga studio.
