noopener">A47 is longer east to west than it is west to east.

 Of course it isn’t.

What we mean is that West Norfolk is always expected to travel to Norwich, while Norwich rarely seems able to make the journey to us.

 Everything gravitates east.

 Services, investment, decisions and opportunities.

We are told not to worry because whatever we have lost is still available in Norwich.

Frankly, people here are fed up with it.

And when it comes to the future of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, they are not just fed up.

 They are scared.

This is about far more than whether we keep an A&E sign above a door.

There is concern about the future of emergency care, obstetrics, maternity, neonatal care and other acute services.

No decisions have yet been made and I accept that.

But these options are being discussed and West Norfolk needs to make its voice heard before decisions are made, not afterwards.

For years we were promised that King’s Lynn would retain a proper District General Hospital.

QEH’s own clinical strategy said that A&E and maternity services would always remain on site and locally available.

 What has changed?

 Because the geography certainly hasn’t.

Norwich can be an hour from the southern edge of King’s Lynn on a good day.

From Hunstanton, the marshes and many of our rural communities it can be an hour and a half or more.

On plenty of days it is longer.

Now imagine making that journey with a woman in labour.

Imagine your baby has been born prematurely and is seriously ill in Norwich.

You are a frightened young couple and all you want to do is sit beside your baby.

Instead you face hours on the road every day, perhaps for weeks.

 That isn’t merely inconvenient.

 It is cruel.

We already see what centralisation can mean when families have to travel to Hellesdon to visit relatives receiving inpatient mental health treatment.

Imagine your husband, wife, son or daughter has been sectioned at one of the most vulnerable moments of their life and you have to cross the county simply to sit beside them.

Try doing that without a car.

Try doing it when you are elderly.

Try combining it with a job and children.

A service does not remain accessible to West Norfolk simply because it still exists somewhere in Norwich.

Then there is the economic impact.

QEH employs more than 4,000 people.

It is one of the biggest employers in this part of the country.

Start stripping major clinical services out of King’s Lynn and this stops being solely a health story.

What happens to the doctors, nurses, midwives, healthcare assistants, administrators and support staff attached to those services?

Even losing a fraction of a workforce of that size could mean hundreds of jobs.

Those are people who live here.

 Their children attend our schools.

They shop in our town centre.

 They eat in our restaurants.

 They use local tradespeople.

They buy homes and spend their wages throughout the West Norfolk economy.

Take those jobs away and the money goes with them.

Then explain how any of this fits with what we are being asked to do with housing.

We are planning for enormous housing growth, with the current trajectory reaching around 1,000 new homes a year in some years.

Who exactly are we expecting to move into them if at the same time we are stripping away the services families reasonably expect to have?

What young family looks at a place where emergency care, obstetrics, neonatal care and other essential hospital services are disappearing over the horizon and thinks that is where they want to put down roots?

We cannot be expected to build homes on that scale while allowing West Norfolk to become a health desert.

It also makes a mockery of our ambition for King’s Lynn to become a Marmot place.

The whole point of that work is to tackle health inequalities.

We are working with the Institute of Health Equity to understand why people in some of our communities experience poorer health and shorter lives and what we can do about it.

How can we talk seriously about reducing health inequality while making essential healthcare harder to reach?

You cannot tackle health inequality by moving healthcare further away from the people who already face the greatest barriers to accessing it.

There will always be specialist services that need to be concentrated in centres of excellence.

 I understand that.

Clinical decisions must be based on evidence.

 But distance is evidence too.

 Deprivation is evidence.

 Transport is evidence.

The impact on families is evidence.

The effect on the local economy is evidence.

And the cumulative impact of repeatedly taking things away from one part of the county matters too.

People in West Norfolk are tired of losing out.

We should not have to fight continually to prove that this part of Norfolk matters.

 My family lives here.

My children and grandchildren live here.

This isn’t an abstract argument about NHS structures to me.

If my grandchild is seriously ill, I want them treated close to home.

If a local couple has a premature baby, I don’t want them spending hours every day travelling backwards and forwards to Norwich.

If someone has a mental health crisis, I want their family to be able to support them.

And if we are going to build thousands of new homes and persuade people and businesses to invest here, I want them to know that West Norfolk has a future.

People here are angry because this feels desperately unfair.

Once again, West Norfolk is being asked to accept less and travel further.

The A47 seems very short when somebody in Norwich decides that we can come to them.

Perhaps it is time Norwich travelled west and understood what these decisions actually mean.

West Norfolk is not an outpost of Norwich.

We are not second class citizens and we should not be expected to accept second class healthcare.

The A47 is longer east to west than it is west to east.
